Welcome
This brochure offers a short introduction to St John’s College as you follow the tourist route through the
College. A full guide about the College, its buildings and its history, may also be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge.
We welcome visitors, but please remember that the College is a place where researchers and students live and work.
Please keep to the route marked on the attached map, follow instructions from our staff, and do not go anywhere
marked “private”.
First Court
Much of the College is made up of quadrangles(四方院) or “courts”. There are three running west to east from
the Great Gate to the river, known simply as First, Second and Third. First Court was built in 1511 to the south of
the old hospital and contained living quarters, the original chapel(小教堂), library, hall and kitchens.
The Chapel
The 19th century chapel was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, apart from the tower which was an
afterthought made possible by a former member of St John’s College called Henry Hoare, who unfortunately died
before he could pay for it all!
Chapel Court
The style of Chapel Court in the south range is Tudor, the west range Victorian and the remainder built by Sir
Edward Maufe in 1938-40. Part of the west range was transformed into a new College library in 1994. The arms
above the archway in the centre of the north range are those of John Fisher, carved by the famous sculptor, Eric Gill,
who favors Catholic methods.
21.When touring in the St John’s College, what should visitors remember?
A.Private places are not accessible to tourists.
B.Tourists can choose specific routes randomly.
C.A full guide of the College is provided for free.
D.Researchers and students can be tourists’ guides.
22.What can be inferred about Chapel Court?
A.It is primarily a modern structure.

There comes a time for every family when the tables turn and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came
recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son Nathaniel in Los Angeles—our first visit in several years
and the longest since he moved west in 2014. A whole week under his roof!
“Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel warned on our first night. The
same thing happened when I washed my hands. All right, I figured, this is California, where drought is a concern.
More commands followed. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning—it will warm
up when we get to the park. This is how you should refold the rug(毯子)over the chair after you use it.
At first I wondered how I’d raised such a dominator. Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of
parenting at Nathaniel and his siblings when they were young. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can
live however you want,” I’d say. “Until then, you’ll have to do as we ask.” Now it was payback time.
So I smilingly followed Nathaniel’s household commands.
Our role change gave me hope for his future parenting ability. We were walking along El Matador Beach on
our last afternoon and hit an extended patch of rocks-clearly the end of the line, I thought. But Nathaniel persuaded
me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my arthritic(关节炎的) feet and hands as
ocean waves came close. I was terrified, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy stretch.
“You did it! I’m really proud,” he said, smiling, as if I’d just learned to ride a bike. It was then that I knew for
sure that the son also rises to fatherhood.
24.Why did the author and his wife stay in Los Angeles?
A.For a visit. B.For business.
C.For drought relief. D.For medical treatment.
25.Which is most likely to be a command from Nathaniel?
A.Never speak to me like that again. B.One pump of hand cleaner is enough.
C.Stop crying and do something about it. D.I’d like you to make two cups of coffee for us.
26.Which word can be used to describe Nathaniel?
A.Merciless. B.Indifferent. C.Attentive. D.Playful.
27.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Goodbye, Fatherhood B.The Pain of Parenting
C.The Dominator Is Back D.A Week under My Son’s Roof
D
An unusual northern rt tree that looks like it is striding across an empty field has won New Zealanders’
hearts. The giant plant, which looks strikingly similar to an Ent from “The Lord of the Rings”, is centuries old and
has just been crowned New Zealand’s Tree of the Year, walking away with 42% of the public vote, which included
five other finalists(决赛选手).
Standing alone in the middle of a large farm on the west coast of South Island, the strange tree, which has been
nicknamed the “walking tree” because it looks like it’s striding across a field, is a northern rt—one of New
Zealand’s tallest flowering tree species that can live for up to 1,000 years. Its roots and long, arm-like branches
make the tree look like an Ent—a fictional race of tree-like creatures that guard the forests of Middle-earth.
Measuring around 105 feet (32 meters) tall-around the same height as a seven-story building, the walking tree
is an “exceptional feature” and a “prime example of the remarkable trees that we New Zealanders are fortunate to
experience,” competition organizer Brad Cadwallader said in a statement.
Northern rt trees are a type of tree that starts life growing on the surface of a host tree before growing aerial
roots that eventually reach the ground. The walking tree likely began life high up in the canopy(树冠) of its host,
living off air and rainwater before reaching the ground. Its unusual root layout was likely caused by how it grew
around its host tree, which probably died off centuries ago.
Northern rt trees were once one of the most common species in the country’s forests. However, their range
has decreased over the last few decades and they are now listed as nationally vulnerable, according to the New
Zealand Plant Conservation Network.
28.What does the underlined word “striding” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Standing. B.Walking. C.Sitting. D.Resting.
29.What can we know about the rat tree from Paragraph 2?
A.Its roots and branches contribute to its resemblance to an Ent.
B.It is just a fictional race existing in Middle-earth.
C.It is estimated to be already 1,000 years old.
D.It is guarding the forests of Middle-earth.
30.What is Cadwallader’s attitude toward the rata tree?
A.Joking. B.Critical. C.Admiring. D.Objective.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly deal with?
A.The exact location of northern rt trees.
B.The current situation of northern rt trees.
C.The unique characteristics of northern rt trees.
D.Public ignorance about building conservation parks.

Noise-canceling headphones are widespread nowadays, but scientists have found a way to take these devices
to the next level-by creating headphones that can focus on one external sound source and block out all other noises.
The technology, called “Target Speech Hearing (TSH),” uses artificial intelligence (AI) to let the wearer face a
speaker nearby and-after a delay of a couple of seconds-lock onto their voice. This lets the user hear only that
specific audio source, maintaining the signal even if the speaker moves around or turns away.
“We tend to think of AI now as web-based chatbots(聊天机器人) that answer questions,” said the study lead
author, Shyam Gollakota, professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. “In this
project, we develop AI to modify the auditory perception of anyone wearing headphones, given their preferences.
With our devices you can now hear a single speaker clearly even if you are in a noisy environment with lots of
other people talking,” Gollakota said in a statement.
TSH follows on from research the same scientists conducted into “semantic hearing” last year. In that project,
they created an AI-powered smartphone app that could be paired with headphones, which let the wearer choose to
hear from a list of preset “classes” while canceling out all other noises. For example, a wearer could choose to hear
alarms, babies, speech or birds-and the headphones would single out only those noises and block out all others. To
use TSH, the wearer faces straight in front of the speaker whose voice they wish to hear, before tapping a small
button on the headphones to activate the system when positioned correctly.
For now, TSH can only enroll a single audio source, or a single speaker, at any one time, and it’s less
successful if there’s another noise of a similar volume coming from the same direction.
32.What can noise-canceling headphones do?
A.Block out all sounds. B.Restore listening loss.
C.Concentrate on all sounds. D.Identify the source of a specific sound.
33.What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A.The headphones’ initial draft. B.The headphones’ imperfection.
C.The headphones’ working mechanism. D.The headphones’ operating components.
34.Which does Gollakota most likely agree to?
A.TSH is designed to change the wearer’s preferences.
B.TSH enables clear listening despite noises around.
C.TSH is actually a question-answering chatbot.
D.TSH can be used to address noise pollution.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To inform readers about an advancement in auditory technology.
B.To give an account of AI’s application to facial recognition.
C.To educate readers about the innovative development in AI.
D.To honor an outstanding computer scientist and engineer.

Before heading out to an event with many people, you should be aware of the dangers of a crowd crush.
Though the risk of crowd crush is rare, it can be deadly when it happens. 36 In the past, such
instances have caused horrible injury and even death. To avoid such a fate, it’s best to escape the crush before it
happens.
37 This will give you an idea of the surroundings-pay special attention to any way out. Once you
arrive, choosing the right spot can be crucial. Avoid the middle or front; instead, pick the back or edges of a crowd.
It’s also important to trust your feelings. Stay aware to see if you feel packed in at any point. The more crowded the
event becomes, the sooner you may need to retreat to a safe place.
If you do end up in a crush, here’s how you can stay safe. The most important thing you can do is stay on your
feet. To do this, spread your feet apart and bend your knees a little. 38 Trying to move against a crowd of
people will only end in disaster.
If you are so densely packed that you are unable to move, you should try to protect your lungs. A common
cause of death in a crowd crush isn’t being crushed but rather losing air because of the pressure on their organs
from the crowd. So, hold out your arms in front of your chest to allow space between you and the person in front of
you. 39
Helping others is another great way to keep everyone safe. 40 So if your neighbour in the crowd falls
to the ground, help them up.
There is usually fun where the crowds are, so enjoy yourself. But remember to stay alert!
A.First, it’s wise to prepare yourself before you go.
B.Also, make sure to move with the flow of the crowd.
C.And keep your head up to ensure a steady supply of oxygen.
D.In this case, you can be in a safe spot to avoid being crushed.
E.Before attending a crowded event, look up a map of the venue.
F.Once one person falls down, more people tend to fall over them.
G.Crowd crushes can occur when people are packed tightly and begin to fall over.

It was late, about 10:15 p.m. when Janice Esposito safely arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station; she
happily jumped into her little car, and couldn’t wait to begin the 20-minute drive home to see her loved husband
and seven-year-old son. She had just returned from visiting her older mother in Los Angles and had traveled the
route many times before. She drove on autopilot(自动驾驶) practically and skillfully: a left onto Station Road, then
a left on Montauk Highway, and then suddenly—wham!
Out of nowhere on that awful night a truck hit Janice’s car, violently pushing her to move backward some 100
feet away onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the car, bruised(撞伤) but mostly just knocked out by the impact and
by the vehicle’s airbags.
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed. He’d just closed his book, turned off the light and was
lazily crawling under the covers when he heard the high-pitched clang sound of metal on metal and breaking glass
coming from not far outside his bedroom window. As a volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64,
instantly became alert and never stopped to think. He quickly grabbed a big professional flashlight out of habit, put
his own cellphone in the pocket of his pajamas(睡衣), and hurriedly ran out the door without getting changed. “Any
firefighter would have done what I did,” he later told Newsday. “We’re always on duty.”
The first truck DiPinto came upon, 2,000 feet away from his front yard, was the one that had hit Janice, who
was trapped in her car still, her eyes closed and her mind semiconscious. He looked around and spotted one wheel
of Janice’s car positioned on the railroad tracks.
