Salvador Dali is one of the most influential and famous painters of all time. Not just a painter, but his

personality was as unique as his paintings. His surrealistic paintings are so famous that they overshadow his other

artworks.

Hearing the name “Salvador Dali” alone creates an image, or perhaps I should say, a painting in the minds of

people. His paintings are usually surrealistic and hard to understand, but once understood, they convey their

message so fluently and beautifully. During his creative exploration, Dali went deep into various artistic styles,

such as impressionism, cloisonne (分格画), and cubism (立体画), before eventually venturing into surrealism. It

was in this period that he created one of his famous paintings, Sick Boy—Pointillism (点彩派).

Pointillism is the method of painting using only small dots of color to create the painting. Sick Boy is a clear

mixture of expressionism and pointillism, but there’s more going on here. Dali has added a little bit of surrealism as

well. This is a self-portrait of him in Cadaqus, the coastal town where he used to spend his summers.

While the sickness of the child can be seen from his lying position, exhausted and weak, and looking at the

viewers’ eyes, the actual sickness is far more terrifying. Take a look at his hand with long, pointed fingers. His face

presents a disturbing and threatening expression. It is hardly human. It almost feels like there is another creature

inside the body of this kid, using the skin and face as a cover.

The parallel can be drawn from the other living thing in the painting, the caged canary (金丝雀). Similar to the

canary, which is imprisoned inside this cage to stay, the boy’s true self is imprisoned inside the body. There might

be some dark and sick intentions inside his mind, but those must be controlled. The way the sick child lies on

the chair and stares ahead makes it one of the frightening paintings by Salvador Dali.

24. What are the main features of Salvador Dali’s paintings?

A. Hope and optimism. B. Fluency and harmony.

C. Beauty and simplicity. D. Complexity and confusion.

25. What is the subject of Sick Boy?

A. A portrait Dali painted for himself. B. The painter’s favorite coastal town.

C. A canary imprisoned inside the cage. D. The exploration of various artistic styles.

26. What is the significance of the caged canary in the painting?

A. It represents the boy’s sickness. B. It conveys the beauty of nature.

C. It symbolizes the boy’s trapped true self. D. It shows the sick boy’s love for animals.

27. Which words can best describe Salvador Dali?

A. Energetic and realistic. B. Negative and stubborn.

C. Strange and threatening. D. Unconventional and creative.

In Iceland, these green houses melt into the natural landscape, a technique that first appeared with the arrival

of British settlers during the 9th through 11th centuries. Unlike their previous warm and wet climate, wood was

rare and slow to regenerate. Turf (草皮) became their first pick to make shelters.

Across Europe, turf bricks — widely available — were cut from local bogs (沼泽) and transported for use at

higher lands. The turf was then laid over a wooden structure to form walls and a thick roof — to keep cold out from

tough northern climates. Turf walls were replaced as frequently as every 20 years, and even up to 70 years.

It is difficult to find out its precise origins in the archaeological record. However, evidence of similar

constructions can be found in many countries throughout the ages. Historic records suggest that up to 50 percent of

Icelandic houses were partly comprised of turf until the late 19th century. As populations began to gather in cities

like Reykjavik, wood buildings replaced stones and earth architecture. After fires burned up the city in 1915,

concrete became the material of choice. In 1918 Iceland gained independence from Denmark, setting in motion a

wave of nationalism that threatened the survival of turf houses. Advocates of modernization argued that Reykjavik

paled in comparison to the grand architecture that graced the skylines of Paris, Berlin, and London. Traditional

techniques were criticized as “rotten Danish wood” from a troubled era, and there was a campaign to clear them in

favor of modern buildings — a move later criticized by many as destruction of cultural heritage.

A tourism boom in the latter half of the 20th century encouraged Iceland to reexamine the value of traditional

architecture. Do Icelanders still live in turf houses? The quickest way to answer this question would be no. You

might still see an occasional grass roof but that has everything to do with architecture and Icelanders wanting to

hold on to their beloved heritage rather than any need for turf as insulation (隔热) material.

28. Why did people use turf to build houses in the past?

A. It matched nature perfectly. B. It could be changed often.

C. It was long-lasting and accessible. D. It was a request by settlers.

29. What was a direct result of the wave of nationalism?

A. People packed into Reykjavik. B. Traditional architecture was in favor.

C. Turf houses were almost unable to exist. D. Concrete became a new building material.

30. What can we infer about the turf house from the last paragraph?

A. It starts coming to life. B. It will live on.

C. Its material will improve. D. It is out of date.

31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A. Iceland’s turf stretches brightly across Europe

B. Iceland’s turf — An important building material

C. Iceland’s turf houses — An exceptional example

D. Iceland’s turf houses survive beautifully with nature

D

You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish

and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can

have a different understanding about it.

When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a

fish — eradicating their hunger — and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense

first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your

position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.

But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People

meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence

may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation?

Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to

help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach

a new skill.

But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to

pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through

narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say.

The other is empathy (共情). The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the

opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.

32. What is the function of the first paragraph?

A. To illustrate a concept. B. To put up an example.

C. To bring in a new viewpoint. D. To introduce the background.

33. What does the underlined word “eradicating” mean in Paragraph 2?

A. Getting rid of. B. Paying attention to.

C. Standing up for. D. Putting up with.

34. What should we do first for those in disasters?

A. Get them to think straight. B. Enhance their confidence.

C. Fill their head with wisdom. D. Teach them a new skill.

35. Which does the author probably agree with according to the last paragraph?

A. Live and learn. B. Put yourself in others’ shoes.

C. Never teach a fish to swim. D. Don’t teach old dogs new tricks.

It’s been said that good cooking is an art form. ___36___ It’s a way to teach kids vital skills, such as critical

thinking, creativity and collaboration. It invites kids to make connections to the broader world by asking, “Where

does our food come from?” and “What is the history of this recipe?” And it allows them to apply what they are

learning in school in a new context.

Cooking brings science concepts to life. ___37___ It also tests the math skills of young chefs. Measuring

ingredients are frequent tasks in cooking or baking.

___38___ When Helen, 11, took her cake out of the oven, she was disappointed to find that it was flat as a

might not have tried. Jad, 11, had never eaten quinoa (藜麦) before testing a recipe for quinoa with herbs. His

done a lot of holiday baking, including our favorite chocolate-chip cookies. We both felt excited despite the mess

that accompanied that experience.

E. Cooking encourages your child’s interest and excitement in healthy foods.

F. It is a perfect opportunity for them to learn that oil and water don’t usually mix.

G. Recipe failures matter as much as the successes, as they help kids develop resilience (韧性) .
