Atop a hill in a garden, three children were having a heated discussion. It's not fair! Mag threw
her bike to the ground. Why won't you let me have a go? Paul exchanged glances with his friend
Billy, both planning a bike ramp （坡道） for an upcoming stunt （特技） bike competition.
You're too young for it, Paul declared. Upset, Mag ran away.
Paul and Billy set out to build a bike ramp out of a wooden board and an upturned metal bucket.
One end of the board rested on the ground while the other rested on the bucket. The hilly terrain
seemed perfect for their plan. However, each attempt to ride the ramp ended with the board out of
place.

Determined to secure the board, Paul rushed to his father's shed and returned with four leftover
house bricks. Placing them strategically, he hoped it would now hold for their stunt attempts.
Paul gave Billy the thumbs up, who was waiting at the hill's highest point. Billy raised himself
off his seat. Riding down, he faced the strong wind, his helmet swinging. Absorbed in their testing,
neither noticed Mag approaching with her own plan.
Hidden behind a tree, Mag, seeing her chance, kicked the board off the bucket. Just at that
moment, Billy's bike arrived and he simply could not brake in time. With no ramp, the bike swung
violently off course, heading directly toward the shed.
Reacting swiftly, Paul leaped aside, avoiding the bike's path while Billy hit the shed door with
a loud bang. Mag, realizing her fault, began to sob in regret.
Why did you do that? Paul, dusting himself down, turned to face his sister. Tearfully, Mag
blurted, You guys said I couldn't have a go. . .
Paul's anger faded away. He said gently, You can't take part in the sport, but you can help us
rebuild the ramp. Smiling weakly, Mag put her hand in her big brother's. They headed over to help
Billy, who was a little shaken but otherwise unhurt.

I dropped rizz into a conversation at home as a test to see my son's familiarity with Internet
slang. Don't say that, he said. You sound terrible. In terms of ego, it was a failure. But as a test
of generational differences in language use, it was a success.
I read in a newspaper that Oxford University Press had chosen rizz as the word of 2023. Short
for charisma, rizz is defined as style, charm, or attractiveness. Internet slang has been confusing
and difficult for me to understand. Considering it enjoys great popularity among Gen Z associates, as
a Gen X director, should I keep up with the Internet slang and be prepared for it at work?
One thing is clear: The attempt to resist is in vain. Internet slang is a product of its time.
Technology makes humour more important. Slang, says Erica Dhawan, author of Digital Body
Language, can create closeness with colleagues when body language is no longer the primary
communication.
That doesn't mean Gen X leaders should be trying to drop rizz into conversation. It is
embarrassing. Partly it seems fake, but also because it is hard to keep up with the way language
changes if not immersed in it. Tony Thorne, of the Slang and New Language Archive at King's
College London, says Gen Z is heavily influenced by viral trends, it is not strictly only verbal ... it
always has one eye on visual metaphors and allusions （影射） too.
Workplace norms evolve. Just five years ago senior leaders were complaining about headphones
in the office, Dhawan points out. Now they're normal. So too with language. Slang slips into
common usage quickly. Oxford University Press's past years words include vax, toxic and
climate emergency, all of which seem fairly mainstream now. Who signs their emails with Yours
faithfully? Far more common is: Thanks, Kind regards or Best wishes.
I still frown when I see signoffs like KR or BW-but give me another year, Thx.

You laugh out loud when a friend misses a step on the stairs, but soon you feel guilty of laughing
at other's clumsiness. You may ask yourself Shouldn't I feel empathetic （共情的） for the person
involved? Don't worry. Your laughter is not provoked by lack of empathy. As a clinical
psychologist, I'd like to shed light on different aspects of such a situation which can bring our usually
well-meaning laughter.
The first of these ingredients is surprise. The unexpected situation surprises us and creates a
departure from the predictable, from what we expected to see. This incongruous （不一致的）
situation highlights our errors of prediction. Laughing at the situation is a way of resolving the
incongruity by making a new and comic interpretation of what we witnessed.
Besides, we react according to how we interpret the person's facial expression. A study explored
this. Participants were asked to view 210 images representing three types of faces: faces expressing
a puzzled look, faces expressing pain or anger, and people whose bodies were placed in awkward
positions, without the face being visible.
At the end of the study, participants rated the images with puzzled faces as funnier than images
in which the faces expressed pain or anger, and funnier than images in which bodies were shown in
ridiculous positions but no facial expression was seen.
So when we perceive puzzlement in the facial expression of the victim of clumsiness, this
information creates a context that makes us laugh. On the other hand, if we can read suffering or
anger in the facial expression, we will be touched by the pain of the victim of the fall and be
empathetic, which will prevent us from laughing.
Let's forgive ourselves for laughing at comical situations involving other people's clumsiness!
Having learnt that they are not actually in danger and have not really hurt themselves, we aren't
laughing at the other person's suffering.
