Lunar New Year used to be a daylong celebration for us. My parents tried really

hard to recreate the season for my sisters and me here in America. On New Year’s

day, my family, including all my uncles, aunts, and cousins, dressed in new clothes,

gathered at my grandma’s house. Kids were pulled out of school, and adults took the

day off. The celebration lasted throughout the day and late into the night, with one

tradition following another.

Fast-forward to 2019: My grandma has passed away, the adults are elderly, and

the kids have grown up and are living their own life. The Lunar New Year

celebration is no longer elaborate as it used to be. As we melt into American culture,

the “olden ways”, as we call them , have fallen away. Life seems to have got busier

and much more complex, but I often feel something is missing.

英语试题 第 4页(共 11 页)

For us first-generation kids, it is often easier to let go of the traditions and

customs of our parents’. They don’t mean as much to us as they do for them. At the

same time, they are still a part of our culture. I realized that the diaspora (流散) of

young Asian American in the United Sates is not unique to me. It is an ongoing inner

struggle that we all wrestle with. My Asian features and skin color do not entirely

define who I am. I am as much a “hamburger” guy as a “rice” individual. I can’t

quite fully claim that I am an American and not fully Asian, there isn’t really a check

box that I can mark. I am Chinese-Vietnamese-Asian-American.

I now have two little boys. It saddens me to think they will never be able to

experience what my sisters and I did as little kids during this holiday. Recently, for

the first time, I’ve hung up Lunar New Year decorations around the house and

replaced our Christmas wreath (花环)on the front door with decorative firecrackers.

In a way, my sons are forcing me to slow down and explore my heritage.

24. What do we know about the author’s family in Paragraph 1?

A. They lived a very hard life in America.

B. They respected the old and loved the young.

C. They stuck to the traditions of Lunar New Year.

D. They paid little attention to children’s education.

25. What dose the underlined word “elaborate” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. carefully prepared and organized

B. extremely simple and easy

C. unbelievable and ridiculous

D. humorous and appealing

26. Why does the author mention “hamburger” and “rice” in Paragraph 3?

A. To suggest various choices.

B. To indicate diverse identities.

C. To clarify different customs.

D. To compare personal tastes.

27. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?

A. We should strengthen family bonds.

B. We are what we choose to be.

C. Passing down family traditions matters.

D. Knowing yourself is a lifelong process.

After taking a few steps back, Hadj Benhalima rushed toward the building,

pushed himself upward with his foot against the wall and stretched out his arm. At

the peak of his jump, he flipped off a light switch, and the bright lights of a nearby

barbershop went off immediately.

英语试题 第 5页(共 11 页)

This is what Hadj and his friends have been doing for the past two years:

swinging around Paris and switching off wasteful shop signs at night, in an effort to

fight against light pollution and save energy. And they are all enthusiastic about

Parkoura sport that consists of running and jumping over urban obstacles.

While climbing other people’s property to turn off their lights may strike some

as a form of trespassing (非法入侵), the Parkour athletes insist their activities are

only about enforcing seldom-respected rules.

More than a decade ago, Paris City Hall issued orders requiring stores to turn

off all signs and window displays from 1 am to 6 am, but they are widely ignored

with little consequence. “for 10 years there has been no follow-up, no control, no

punishment,” said Anne-Marie Ducroux, the head of the National Association for the

Protection of the Sky and the Night Environment.

That is why Hadj and his friends have taken matters into their own hands. The

group often gathers in the so-called Golden Triangle neighborhood, in western Paris,

which is the center of French luxury.

Enforcing the orders in place of the authorities certainly enters a legal grey area.

But the Parkour athletes say all the police officers they have met during their rounds

have allowed their actionas long as it causes no damage.

And it seems that their efforts have produced the desired result, because Hadj

says he has noticed that in recent months, several shops have stopped leaving their

lights on after his group targeted them. He hopes others will follow suit. “At least,

I’ll sleep better,” he said.

28. What are Hadj Benhalima and his friends trying to do at night?

A. To practice their Parkour skills.

B. To remove possible urban obstacles.

C. To turn off unnecessary store lights.

D. To ensure the safety of their neighborhood.

29. What can we learn about the rules set by the government?

A. They are too strict to follow.

B. They have achieved the desired effect.

C. They put great pressure on stores.

D. They are not carried out effectively.

30. What is the government’s attitude towards the Parkour athletes’ act?

A. Worried. B. Supportive C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.

31. What does the text mainly talk about?

A. Why Parkour is so popular among young people in Paris.

B. Why it is difficult to fight against light pollution in Paris.

C. How the lighting of shop signs affects the night view of Paris.

D. How young people in Paris help save energy through Parkour.

Drinking a cup of tea can improve creativity, a study suggests.

Researchers gave men and women either tea or water and then asked them to

complete a word association game, which was used to measure a form of creativity

known as convergent thinking (聚合思维).

In the game, the participants were given sets of words such as “same, tennis,

head” and asked to find a meaningful link between them. The answer, in this case,

would be “match”. After analysing the results in a way that ruled out the potential

effects of a person’s intelligence and language ability, the researchers, from Peking

University in China, found that those who drank the tea performed significantly

better in the word association game. The tea drinkers scored an average of 13.89 in

the word association game compared with 12.94 for water drinkers.

The researchers said it was not clear why tea has this beneficial effect. Tea

contains caffeine and theanine(茶胺酸), which can improve attention, but the 100

participants in the study drank only a small amount of tea90ml, on averageand

carried out the tests very soon after consuming it, meaning any effect would have

been ignored. “this result showed that the tea drinking event itselfrather than the

biological components of teaplayed a positive role,” the researchers said.

“Previous research has found that people tend to associate tea drinking with a

specific set of personality traits, such as smart, creative, elegant, confident, and

stable. It may be that when participants are stimulated by tea, the mental

representation of a tea drinker also activated, and they unconsciously think that they

should be smarter and more creative,” they added. “Future research should focus on

specific mechanisms (机制)and clarify which variables moderate the impact of tea

consumption on convergent thinking.”

32. What did the participants have to do in the study?

A. Pair the words with each other.

B. Guess the meaning of the words.

C. Find a connection between the words.

D. Tell the difference among the words.

33. What helped a participant get a higher score according to the researchers?

A. The action of drinking tea itself.

B. The participant’s intelligence.

C. The participant’s language ability.

D. The biological components of tea.

34. What can be inferred from the previous research?

A. Drinking tea makes people more active.

B. Drinking tea is popular among the youth.

英语试题 第 7页(共 11 页)

C. People tend to drink tea more than before.

D. People drinking tea are often thought smart.

35. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

A. Drinking Tea Is Good for Health.

B. Drinking Tea Is a Popular Trend.

C. Drinking Tea Makes for Creativity.

D. Drinking Tea Matters a Lot in Life.

How to Politely Cancel Plans Over Text

You made plans with friends, but when it’s time to leave the house, you just

don’t have the energy. Or, maybe something else comes up, and you can’t make it.

36 But with a few tips, you can do it politely.

*Text them as soon as possible.

That way, your friends can rearrange their schedules. If you know you cannot

make it, try to text a day ahead of time. Otherwise, your friends might be annoyed

about the inconvenience. If there’s an emergency and you have to cancel the plan at

the last minute, that’s fine. 37

*Be honest about your situation.

38 If you’ve encountered a change in your schedule, just tell them what

it is. Your friends will be more understanding if they can tell you’re telling the truth.

Just say things like: “I ran into an issue at work.” or “I’m dealing with some family

problems.”

* Ask if you can reschedule.

Instead of saying “Let’s hang out soon!”, pick a new time, so your friends know

that you’re serious. 39 Try to include this in your original message so they

know what you’re doing right away, and make sure it’s a plan you can stick to so

you don’t have to cancel again.

* 40

Add in one more nice thing to make a compliment sandwich. After you tell your

friends you have to cancel and apologize, let them know how much you appreciate

them making plans with you. This will reassure them that you love spending time

with them, and it can even help you feel less guilty, too.

A. Start with your appreciation.

B. Thank them for inviting you out.

C. Let them know how urgent the situation is.

D. There’s no need to lie about what’s going on.

英语试题 第 8页(共 11 页)
