Portugal’s Most Beautiful Seaside Destinations

The long coastline of Portugal is extraordinarily diverse. Wind your way along it and you

will find true Portugal, its history, its heart and its soul.

Cascais

Originally a little white-washed fishing village, Cascais became a summer residence for

wealthy noblemen in the late 19th century. It is now a busy, modern town, but along its

hotels, and its pretty town square and old streets have kept their character.

Comporta

This little village has , until recently ,been a secret of the experts. With hotels now

such picture-perfect white sands that it’s hard to believe you’re in Europe: walk the beach at

sunset, or weave your way on horseback through the green rice fields before a meal of the

freshest of fish on the seashore.

Zambujeira do Mar

Standing between the fierce Atlantic and the plains of the Alentejo, the little fishing

village of Zambujeira do Mar has one of the region’s most beautiful beaches, backed by high

rock cliffs. For five days in August, one of Portugal’s biggest youth music festivals, MEO

Sudoeste , is held here.

Lagos

White-washed Lagos manages to maintain its character and charm while offering lively

nightlife to the locals and tourists. An important naval center in the 15th century, Lagos was

also the capital of the Algarve from1576-1756. Extensively damaged in the 1755 earthquake,

weeks after they set off, they were stranded there overnight without water, food or tents at a

temperature of about 30 .They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell

asleep and did not wake up again.

Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been

close to death.

Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a

challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life

in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.

Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To

mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount

Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches then.

He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the

Himalayas.

The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his

recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he

started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily

Barkley. It takes beneficiaries who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in

challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.

Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was

In a global report of lake colour, researchers estimate that roughly one-third of Earth’s

lakes are blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of

those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the Learn reports in the Sept.28

Geophysical Research Letters.

The changing colours could change how people use those waters and offer clues about

the stability of lake ecosystems. Compared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more

algae and organic matter, says Xiao Yang, a hydrologist (水文专家) at Southern Methodist

University.

Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19 Celsius were

more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps

algae bloom more, which changes the properties of the water.

Yang and colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyze the colour of

more than 85, 000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect

a lake’s colour, the researchers focused on the most frequent colour observed for each lake

over the seven-year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be

used to explore the colours of these lakes. The approach is “ super cool, ” the researchers say.

These satellite data are “ just so powerful. ”

If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they

have come to value, O’Reilly says, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are

often used for drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be

unappealing for play or more costly to clean for drinking. But the colour changes wouldn’t

necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans don’t value lots of algae in a

lake, but if you’re a certain type of fish species, you might be like ‘this is great,’ ” O’Reilly

says.

28. What can we learn about the lakes’ colour change according to the text?

A. It is caused by water pollution.

B. It does harm to the growth of algae.

C. It results from the temperature increase.

D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems.

29. How was the research conducted?

A. By doing field investigation.

B. By analyzing long-term satellite data.

C. By researching previous studies.

D. By observing the daily colour of the lakes.

30. Which word best describes O’Reilly’s attitude to the colour change?

A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Favourable.

31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To call on people to protect lakes.

B. To introduce a new research method.

C. To provide solutions to lakes’ colour change.

D. To present the outcome of a research.

D

There’s a continuing controversy over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds

to let the blind and other pedestrians know they’re on the scene. Some think those sounds

should be standardized—like the “beep, beep, beep” of heavy machinery backing up, so

you’ll think something heavy is coming this way when you hear it—and some think any

sound will do.

2023 年下学期期中考试试卷 高三英语 第 4 页 共 9 页

This is a serious subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (插电式混合动力车) and battery electric

vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University of California, Riverside concludes that

people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet

away, but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away.

In response, the European Union has put new rules into play: all new electric vehicle

models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional engine. Starting

in 2021,all new electric vehicles of any model have had the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System

or AVAS. That sound comes into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s

traveling at less than 12 miles an hour - speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing

with pedestrians.

That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed. We’re calling

on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing

electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on, John Welsman,

guide dog owner and Guide Dogs staff member, said in a statement.

Drivers in most eases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is

that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric

car” when you hear it. And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the mayhem(混乱)on the

roads.

32. How does the author show “electric cars are quiet” in Paragraph 2?

A. By making a classification. B. By making a comparison.

C. By analyzing cause and effect. D. By setting down general rules.

33. What can be learned about the AVAS?

A. It was developed by the European Union.

B. It was designed for inexperienced drivers.

C. It consists of a sound-producing device and an engine.

D. It warns pedestrians of the coming of an electric car.

34. What does John Welsman think of the new rules?

A. They are too strict for drivers. B. They are too complex to follow.

C. They need further improvement. D. They hardly allow for any flexibility.

35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Problems with electric cars

B. A new type of electric car on sale

C. Electric cars with a standardized sound-producing device

D. Quiet electric cars

It was a freezing cold night, all quiet in the street. Tom was walking home after a tiring

day from work, depressed and exhausted. He had been working overtime for nearly a month,

his program was still rejected by his manager. Unfortunately, his mom was diagnosed with

lung cancer the other day. He felt his life couldn't be worse. As he walked, he thought

seriously about giving up his present job and returning to his hometown. H e thought in regret

if he had not left his hometown to seek his fortune in the big city, his life wouldn't have been

in such a hopeless situation.

City life had become too much for him. As he walked down empty streets under tall

buildings, he felt very cold and frightened. He began running, both to keep warm and to keep

away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking

homeless people under blankets. About a block from his apartment, he heard a sound behind

him. He felt frightened and turned back quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or

a gun. The street was empty, with no one in sight. All he saw was a shining streetlight. Still,

the noise had made him nervous, so he started to run faster towards his apartment.

When he finally arrived at his apartment, he was out of breath but relieved. Not until he

reached his apartment building and unlocked the door did he realize what the noise had been.

It had been his wallet falling on the sidewalk. Suddenly, he was not cold or tired anymore.

Without hesitation, he ran out of the door and back to the sidewalk where he had heard the

noise. He searched the sidewalk anxiously for about fifteen minutes, but his wallet was still

nowhere to be found.

第二节

Tom was about to give up the search when he saw a tall man walking towards him.

Frightened and nervous, Tom thought the tall man must be a robber. He wanted to run

away, but on second thought, he also hoped that maybe the man could give him some

clues on where he could find his wallet. As the tall man came close, he asked Tom what

he was up to. Tom told him that he must have lost his wallet somewhere nearby. Hearing

that, the tall man inquired more about Tom's wallet's details and then took out a wallet.

Tom immediately recognized it and was excited to express his gratitude to the tall man.

After getting his wallet back, Tom went back to his apartment. Walking home, Tom

found the city night as attractive as that of his hometown. The moon seemed to lighten the

sky with stars twinkling there. A dense earthly sweet smell rose from the ground,

enveloping everything within its soft embrace. He thought what he found was not only a

wallet but also his hope and enjoyment for the future life. He realized that one could find

a warm home all around the world as long as people were willing to help each other.
