Meles Wudima was five years old and both his parents were dead. He headed to his aunt’s, but she

had seven children and couldn’t take him in permanently. Soon Wudima participated in the street

economy, along with roughly 10,000 other orphan kids in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To survive, he shined

shoes, sold peanuts and begged.

Then, when he was about nine, Wudima met Meheret Worku.

In 1996, Worku flew from Edmonton, Canada to her hometown of Addis Ababa to visit her mother,

accompanied by her husband, Scott Smillie, and their two children, Rebecca and Rachael. The family

came with the intention of helping street-involved children, but without a set plan. It was one of

Rebecca’s questions that finally pushed Worku and Smillie to act. “Why aren’t they wearing any

shoes?” she asked about kids in the street.

Worku left Ethiopia in 1981 on a scholarship to Germany. From Germany she moved to Edmonton,

finished her studies at the University of Alberta, began teaching, met Smillie and started a family. She

got these opportunities thanks to her education — a gift from her father, an Ethiopian general (将军).

The father used his relative wealth to pay for his eight daughters and one son to attend private school,

wanting to offer them what his own sisters never got. Back then, Ethiopia’s school enrollment was just

25 per cent. When Worku’s father died, his final wish, she says, was for his children to someday return

to help their country.

All Ethiopian children can attend government schools, but many don’t. Uniforms, books and other

expenses, poor health and being forced into work are all barriers. Smillie and Worku decided to focus

on getting street-involved orphan children to class. As the years passed, Worku continued to travel

between Canada and Ethiopia to support Wudima and dozens of other Ethiopian students.

Now 29, Wudima has a job as a tour guide. “Some young people are addicted to drugs or they

become pickpockets,” he says. “If you have school, that’s a good advantage to keep yourself from

everything.” Of Worku, he says, “She’s like my mother.”

56. Why did young Wudima get involved in the street economy?

A. He had to make his own living.

B. He saw huge profits in the economy.

B. Government schools provide free books and uniforms.

C. There aren’t enough schools for all the school-aged children.

59. What conclusion can we draw about Worku?

A. She overcame many barriers to get an education.

B. She is the most gifted child of her father’s.

C. She has lived up to her father’s expectations.

D. She has achieved success all by herself.

60. What can be inferred about Wudima?

In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that

artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium (钠 ) levels in some of the

country’s most popular dishes.

The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s

wristband. The device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where

they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo,

whose laboratory collaborated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device.

The team plan to improve the first design and hope to make the chopsticks available to consumers

next year.

The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be

high in salt due to the use of components such as miso (味噌) and soy sauce. The average Japanese

adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health

Organization. The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams

for men and 6.5 grams for women.

The chopsticks use “very weak electricity — not enough to affect the human body — to adjust

the function of ions such as sodium chloride (氯化钠) and sodium glutamate (含钠谷氨酸) to change

the perception of taste by making food seem to taste stronger or weaker”, Kirin said in a statement.

2023-2024 学年度第一学期高三年级期中质量调查(英语)试卷 第 7 页 共 12 页

天津市实验中学滨海学校 TIANJIN EXPERIMENTAL BINHAI HIGH SCHOOL

Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed

that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. High salt intake can

contribute to high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. “To prevent these

diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Kirin researcher Ai Sato. “If we try to

avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would need to suffer the pain of cutting our favourite

food from our diet, or suffer eating food with very little taste.” Miyashita’s lab has also invented a

lickable TV screen that imitates the flavours of various foods.

61. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A. How the chopsticks work. B. What the team plans to do.

C. What the device is designed for. D. How a sense of saltiness is created.

62. What does the underlined word “collaborated” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Competed. B. Negotiated. C. Cooperated. D. Corresponded.

63. What is a direct result of the chopsticks?

A. Food can have weaker flavours and lower sodium.

B. Low-sodium food tastes saltier than it actually is.

C. The health ministry has suggested reducing salt intake.

D. Taking less salt means eating less food with very little taste.

64. According to Ai Sato, these chopsticks are beneficial because _______.

A. they exhibit the highest achievement of Meiji University

B. they can help lower the risks of developing certain diseases

C. they make people suffer less while eating salty food

D. they help people avoid taking less salt in a conventional way

65. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Japan conducts clinical tests on low-sodium diets.

B. Japanese high-tech salty chopsticks gain popularity.

C. Japan invents electronic chopsticks making food taste salty.

D. Japanese researchers reduce sodium levels in popular dishes.

The last decade saw the rise of the field of “plant neurobiology (植物神经生物学 )”. That

debatable field is based on the idea that plants — which do not possess brains — handle information in

ways similar to complicated animal nervous systems. This thinking implies that plants could feel

happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness. But the

chances of that are “effectively zero.” “There’s nothing in the plant comparable to the complexity of the

animal brain,” says Taiz, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Some plants are capable of complicated behaviors. For example, wounded leaves can send warning

signals to other parts of the plant. But plants perform these with equipment that’s very different from the

nervous systems of animals, no brain required, Taiz argues. He and colleagues point out methodological

faults in some of the studies that claim plants have brain-like command centers and animal-like nerve

天津市实验中学滨海学校 TIANJIN EXPERIMENTAL BINHAI HIGH SCHOOL

cells. But beyond the debate over how these studies are conducted, Taiz’s team argues that plant

consciousness doesn’t even make sense from an evolutionary point of view.

“Complicated animal brains advanced in part to help a living being catch a meal and avoid

becoming one,” Taiz says. “But plants are rooted to the ground and rely on sunlight for energy, an

inactive lifestyle that doesn’t require quick thinking or outsmarting a predator (捕食者 ) — or the

energetically expensive nervous systems that enable those behaviors.” “What use would consciousness

be to a plant?” Taiz asks. “If a plant worried and suffered when faced with a threat, it would be wasting

so much energy that it wouldn’t have any left to do anything about that threat,” Taiz says. “Furthermore,

plants have plenty to do without having to be conscious, too. With sunlight, carbon dioxide and water,

plants create the compounds that sustain much of the rest of life on Earth,” Taiz points out. “Isn’t that

enough?”

66. The rise of “plant neurobiology” indicates that _____.

A. It is widely recognized that plants have brains and nervous systems.

B. Scientists proved that plants can handle information like animals.

C. Certain scientists believe that plants may possess consciousness.

D. The science community believes in the promising future of studying it.

67. What is probably Linchol Taiz’s opinion concerning plants?

A. Plants possess animal-like nervous systems.

B. Plants perform complicated behaviors with brains.

C. It is not understandable that plants have consciousness.

D. It is necessary for plants to develop brains for survival.

68. What does the underlined “one” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. A predator. B. A living being. C. An inactive plant. D. A meal.

69. What is the purpose of Taiz’s words in Paragraph 3?

A. To explain a rule. B. To clarify a concept.

C. To support an argument. D. To present a fact.

70. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?

A. Entertainment. B. Life. C. Education. D. Science.

Most of us probably dreamed about becoming an astronaut when we were little. But how many of

us actually became one, or are at least working toward it?

The advice “Always follow your dreams” is something that is typically easier said than done.

But still, this is the one piece of advice that Alyssa Carson wants to share with her peers. This

17-year-old girl from the US has become one of the candidates for NASA’s 2033 project to go to Mars.

Carson has dreamed of going to Mars since she was only three years old. Watching an

astronaut-themed cartoon and learning that humans have only been to the moon but not Mars, Carson

decided that she wanted to be the first one to do so. Since then, she has worked hard toward this goal.

Now 17, Carson is continuing with her space training while still taking on her high school work like a

“normal” teenager, except that she studies all her subjects in four languages—English, French, Spanish

and Chinese.

“I don’t think there’s anything specific that makes it easier for me or makes it something that

others can’t do,” Carson said in an interview with Uproxx News. “I’ve just really focused myself on

what I want to accomplish.”

And Carson is willing to make sacrifices for her dream. She’s fully aware of the danger of the

mission and the possibility that she might never be able to come back. She also accepts the fact that she

can’t get married and start a family. But Carson believes that it’s all worth it, summarizing her view

with this ancient Greek proverb she once quoted? “A society grows great when old men plant trees

whose shade they know they’ll never sit in.”

So after all the hard work that Carson has done and all the sacrifices she’s made, everything still

boils down to the simple phrase, “follow your dreams”. And while some people’s dreams may sound

out of this world, in Carson’s case, they literally (毫不夸张地) are.

71. What will happen to Carson in 2033 if everything goes well? (no more than 8 words)

72. Why did Carson decide to be the first one to go to Mars? (no more than 20 words)

73. How does Carson differ from other students for the school work? (no more than 10 words)

74. How do you understand the underlined sentence? (no more than 20 words)

75. What do you think of the girl? And why? (no more than 25 words)
