He may be approaching his 90th birthday, but Sir David Attenborough has no desire to slow down. Fresh from

an appearance at the Paris climate change summit, he fronts a new series David Attenborough's Great Barrier Reef

(大堡礁).

There was a book by Saville-Kent called The Great Barrier Reef with fascinating hand-drawn illustrations

which always fascinated me as a child. It was as if born from pure imagination. I thought no such place on earth

can surely exist. he said.

Nearly sixty years after his first visit, Attenborough dives 1000 feet below the surface off the Queensland coast

to explore the world's largest living organism like never before.

It was the first place I was lucky enough to scuba (水肺) dive and I was, entering those waters, welcomed

by magic. It was 1957 and I was shocked by remarkable beauty and life. The dive also gives Attenborough the

chance to properly examine the effects of climate change and how the rising temperatures and acidity of the seas is

causing harm to the reef.

You can see where the sea grass is going and you know that if it continues on like that for the next decade or

so, the coral (珊瑚) won't be able to tolerate it. You can show experimentally that they're incapable of living in

these higher temperatures and the acidity will be such that they won't be able to form coral limestone(灰岩)

anymore, he explains.

Attenborough admits that though he is incredibly enthusiastic about spreading awareness of climate change he

was unwilling to be referred to as an authority on the subject. I have a view, but it's a second-hand view. I haven't

done the chemistry, he said.

The truth is, he is well respected and beloved. When he talks about something as serious as climate change we

are willing to pay attention.

24. What impressed Attenborough in his childhood?

A. The vivid imagination of TV series.

B. Severe pollution on the Great Barrier Reef.

C. The importance of climate change summits.

D. Interesting pictures in The Great Barrier Reef.

25. What did Attenborough find during his second visit to the Great Barrier Reef?

A. Mild temperatures stopped the growth of coral.

B. The sea grass posted a potential threat to the coral.

C. The acidity sped up the formation of coral limestone.

D. Scientists were doing experiments under deep sea water.

26. Which of the following can best describe David Attenborough?

A. Passionate and frank. B. Humourous and creative.

C. Brilliant and sociable. D. Competent and generous.

27. What is the purpose of the text?

A. To set an example for the old.

B. To analyze climate change effects.

C. To introduce a famous and admired person.

D. To promote underwater sports.

C

Several years ago, the three of us started a book project to explain how learning and memory work. Two of us,

Roddy Roediger and Mark McDaniel, are cognitive(认知的)scientists who have dedicated our careers to the

study of learning and memory. Peter Brown is a storyteller. We have teamed up to explain how learning and memory

work in this book, and we do this by telling stories of people who have found their way to mastery of complex

knowledge and skills. Through these examples we illustrate the principles of learning that the research shows are

highly effective.

Most books deal with topics serially—they cover one topic, move on to the next, and so on. We follow this

strategy in the sense that each chapter addresses new topics, but we also apply two of the primary learning principles

in the book: spaced repetition of key ideas, and the interleaving of different but related topics. If learners spread

out their study of a topic, returning to it periodically over time, they remember it better. Similarly, if they interleave

the study of different topics, they learn each better than if they had studied them one at a time in sequence. Thus we

cover key ideas more than once, repeating principles in different contexts across the book. The reader will remember

them better and use them more effectively as a result.

This is a book about what people can do for themselves right now in order to learn better and remember longer.

The responsibility for learning rests with every individual. Teachers and coaches, too, can be more effective right

now by helping students understand these principles and by designing them into the learning experience.

While much remains to be known about learning, a large body of research has generated principles and practical

strategies that can be put to work immediately, at no cost, and to great effect.

28. What is the feature of the book?

A. It offers examples and presents arguments.

B. It analyzes cases and questions the authors.

C. It combines stories with research findings.

D. It compares online learning with real-world learning.

29. What does the underlined word interleaving in paragraph 2 mean?

A. Making something more noticeable.

B. Putting something between other things.

C. Demonstrating the existence of something.

D. Guessing the intended meaning of something.

30. What is the author's attitude towards the existing studies about learning?

A. Cautious. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.

31. What is the book mainly about?

A. Effective learning strategies. B. The three authors.

C. The work of cognitive scientists. D. The responsibility of learners.

D

Imagine you're out for an evening stroll(闲逛)in a foreign city, looking to find a restaurant for dinner. You

will look for the busiest restaurant with the most diners because its popularity is bound to reflect on the quality of

food and service. But is this true?

In tourist areas, which lack regular, local customers, the number of diners is unlikely to hold information about

the quality of the meal. In this case, following the example of others could have led to a sub-optimal (次佳的)

dinner choice in an overcrowded restaurant.

Spontaneously (不由自主地) copying other people's thoughts or choices or simply going with the crowd is

often referred to as Herd behaviors. It is a frequent occurrence among humans as well as many other animals, a

common example being sheep.江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126

Herding can appear to make a lot of sense. Average judgements of large groups of people often outperform

individual choices. Furthermore, following the crowd appears to offer protection and comfort--after all, there's

safety in numbers-while helping to maintain a favourable reputation. Finally, following the herd reduces the effort

needed to make a personal or unique decision.

Herd behaviors, while common and easy to explain, can have many harmful effects. Blindly following the herd

can have grave consequences when trying to escape from danger. As seen in examples during earthquakes, herding

may result in the entire crowd rushing for the same door, even if other exits are available. This unavoidably affects

evacuation (撤退) efforts and may result in avoidable injuries or even deaths.

Psychology research suggests that it's surprisingly difficult to resist the influences of the herd. In an experiment

involving financial decision making, researchers found that warning messages about the potential errors of the

crowd were surprisingly ineffective in helping customers make better choices. It appears there is no quick and easy

fix. Instead, it is advisable to involve individuals adopting more critical approaches towards peers' opinion, and

questioning others' behaviors as opposed to blindly following them.

32. What does the author want to tell us by the restaurant example?

A. Undesirable outcomes of herding

B. Wise dinner choices of most customers.

C. Practical ways of avoiding herding.

D. Poor conditions of popular dining places.

33. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about herding?

A. Its application. B. Its disadvantages. C. Its definition. D. Its benefits.

34. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?

A. Send warning messages. B. Follow peers' opinions.

C. Stop behaving critically. D. Have our own judgments.

35. Which is the best title for the text?

A. Why can't you find the reasons for herding?

B. Why shouldn't you follow the crowd blindly?

C. When should you avoid influences of herding?

D. How can you discover wisdom of crowds?

We were visiting our daughter when we adopted our Boston terrier, Tad. An adorable puppy, just three months

old, he became the family's center of attention. Each morning, as soon as he heard my daughter Kayla moving

around downstairs, he had to be taken down for playtime before she left for work. When she came home from work,

we had him waiting for her at the door. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126

After three weeks we left for home. On the drive, we let Tad talk to Kayla on the phone each night. Once home,

every time we called Kayla or she called us, we always put Tad on. He scratched the phone and listened intently

and tried to look into the phone to see her.

One Saturday, Kayla called while we were out. She left a message. Tad was standing beside me when I pressed

the button to listen to the message. He listened to her talking and cocked his head, grinning at me. I played it again

for him.

A few days later, I was taking my shower when I heard the answering machine come on and Kayla leave a

message. I thought it was strange when I heard her message repeat and the machine announce, End of messages.

A few seconds later Kayla's message began yet again.

Wondering what was going on, I climbed out of the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and headed into

the living room. There stood Tad, listening to the answering machine. I stopped and watched. When the message

finished, he stood up with his feet against the edge of the low table, reached over with one paw (爪子) and

slapped(拍打) the answering machine. The message came on again. He dropped back on the floor and listened

happily. I told him no, and distracted (使分心) him from the answering machine while I erased (抹去) the

message.

One possible version:

A Roommate Wanted

I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I’m looking for a roommate to share the rent during my stay in

the UK.

Located near the campus, the well-furnished flat is equipped with modern appliances. There are two separate

bedrooms and bathrooms, including a shared kitchen and a balcony, which can guarantee your privacy and

convenience.

I’m a friendly and easy-going boy who’d like to keep my room neat and tidy, so it’ll be great if my

roommate has a lot in common with me. If interested, you can reach me at LiHua @ gmail.com.

第二节(满分 25 分)

One possible version:

A few days later I was in the kitchen when I heard, “You have no messages.” I got utterly confused and

headed for the living room to figure out what was exactly going on. It was Tad who slapped the answering

machine! He stood with his feet on the edge of the table, staring at the machine expectantly. However, after

repeating the process for several times, Tad was running out of patience with his paws hitting the button really

hard. Then it dawned on me that Tad was eager to hear Kayla talking.

Knowing what Tad wanted, I called Kayla that night and asked her to leave him a message. After hearing

what had happened, Kayla agreed to give Tad a surprise. The next morning, when Tad returned home after a walk

outside, he ran into the living room and pressed the button of the answering machine again. His face lit up with

excitement as he clearly heard the sweet and familiar voice: “I do miss you, Tad.” This was indeed a special

message for him. He could listen to it whenever he wanted to hear Kayla’ s voice and we both longed for the next

reunion with our beloved Kayla.

W: What are you doing with the computer, Richard? Chatting with friends?

M: No. Actually I’m searching and checking the classified ads to find information about apartments. You know, I

live too far away from our company.

Text 3

M: Karen, what about going to the theater after dinner tonight?

W: Sorry, Mike, but I haven’t gone to the gym for days. I must go tonight. You can go with me if you want.

Text 4

M: What an awful month we are having!

W: Yes, please. My training begins at 2:30 pm and it will last for two hours.

Text 6

M: I’m off now, Mom. I’m going to meet Ben at the youth club. He has bought a new wheel for his bike, and he

W: Well, do that before you start work on the bike, because the library isn’t open this afternoon. And don’t come

W: Of course. Here you are.

M: OK. I think I’ll spend lots of time on this book.

Text 8

M: Oh, that’s terrible! Were you late?

W: Yeah. I arrived at my company at 8:30, 30 minutes late for my work.

M: Oh, I am never late for my work. I used to catch the first bus, and it was always crowded. Now I drive to work,

and I usually set off early to avoid the rush hour.

W: But the parking around here is so expensive.

M: Actually, I drive to work with some of the other employees here, so we can share the gas and parking fees.

W: Do you think I could share a ride too?
