Rosemary Curts didn’t become a teacher for money or prestige(声望)or because she wanted a drama-free

life.Curts,an energetic 30-year-old high school teacher in Texas, become a teacher because she loves math, and she

wants to share her passion and the beauty she sees in math with others.

One of the people Curts has impacted is Jasmine, whom she first encountered when Jasmine was a junior(三年

级 学 生 ) in high school. Jasmine bravely participated in a class of seniors. After graduating last year, Jasmine

approached Curts to tell her that she got into Texas Tech and planned to major in computer science. After wandering

awkwardly, she got up the courage finally to speak out what she really wanted to say: You made me like math again.

In those moments, everything makes sense to Curts.

However, lately, these moments have become harder to hold on to due to issues that have made teaching more

difficult. One major issue is the shortage of staff. Last fall, on the first day of school, Curts had 45 students in her

algebra class, which was 15 more than usual. There were so many students that some had to sit on tables or hold their

papers against the wall to write out their math problems. Curts says, There weren't enough desks in my room for all

the kids. And even if there were enough desks, we wouldn't have been able to fit them all in.

Teaching has always been a challenging job. It requires a lot of work, and in many school districts, the pay stinks.

However, for some teachers in these districts, pay isn't the only issue that motivates them to look for other

opportunities. The lack of career advancement is another factor.

Despite these challenges, Rosemary Curts plans to continue teaching. She believes that the connections she

makes with her students and the moments when they have breakthroughs and understand a concept make it all

worthwhile for her.

A brain computer interface (BCI) is a system that directly interprets functional aims, such as the desire to change,

move, control, or interact with something in your environment, from your brain activity. In other words, CIS allow

you to control applications or devices using only your thoughts.

Normally, when we want to control or interact with a device, we first decide what we want to do ,then we

coordinate and use the muscles in our arms, legs, hands, feet, etc.,to carry out the action and then finally, the device

responds to our actions. BCIs bypass that intermediate(中间的)step of coordinating and using your muscles to carry

out the desired action. Instead they use a computer to identify the intended action and then control the application or

device directly. Because of this, BCIs are being researched as a promising access technology for people who have

limited reliable control over their muscles and bodies.

One of the first applications of BCIs was to help people with locked-in syndrome to communicate. Locked-in

syndrome can be a result of long-term neurodegenerative(神经组织退化的)disease like ALS. Researchers also

explored how BCIs could help people with a wide range of physical disabilities. BCIs are now being investigated as

a means to operate power wheelchairs, control prosthetic(假体的)limbs, and provide access to communication

devices, personal computers, tablets, and environmental controls, among other applications. With the expansion of

BCI research, it also extends to the typically developed population. BCIs are now being developed for applications

like assessing tiredness for attention-demanding jobs like air traffic controllers or truck drivers.

Over the next few decades, BCI research and development are expected to continue to grow and we may see

great widespread use of BCIs in people's daily lives. The exciting thing is that increased development and resources

being put into these different BCI applications will help refine and enhance the technology for al BCI applications.

28.What is BCI intended for?

A. Controlling people's mind.

B. Making up decisions for us.

C.Translating brain activities into external responses.

D.Carrying out functional aims using an application.

29.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

A.The way to interact with a device.

B. The working principles of BCI.

C. The research on identifying certain actions.

D.The technology to gain control over muscles.

30.For whom might BCI be helpful?

A.People with physical disabilities.

B.People with mental disorders.

C. People locked in homes.

D.People having no jobs.

31.Which of the following words can best describe the prospect of BCI?

A.Tough.

B. Disappointing.

C. Promising.

D. Unpredictable.

In recent years, Northern Africa has seen the quality of productive land decline significantly due to climate

change and poor land management. United under the banner of(在旗帜下)the Great Green Wall initiative,

national and regional leaders hope to change this trend.

Land degradation(退化)is typically caused by both human-related and natural factors, with over farming,

climate change, and extreme weather being the most common causes. Apart from affecting the natural environment, it

poses serious threats to agricultural productivity, food security, and quality of life.

Jean-Marc Sinnassamy is a senior specialist with the Global Environment Facility(GEF). He helps manage a land

conservation program developed under the Great Green Wall initiative. The GEF has been with the initiative since the

beginning, helping to gather country leaders at the headquarters of the United Nations Convention to Combat

Desertification in Bonn, Germany, in February 2011.

While trees and forests are only part of the focus of the Great Green Wall initiative, many in the media have

described the project as only a tree-planting project aiming at ending the southward expansion of the Sahara Desert.

Sinnassamy is quick to point out two faults in this understanding. The first is that the Great Green Wall initiative is

much more delicate than simply planting a belt of trees across the continent. It’s possible to restore agroforestry(农用

林业)practices without planting any trees. The second is that the Sahara Desert is not, in fact, expanding. We are not

fighting the desert, he says. The Sahara Desert is a very stable ecosystem. Of course, there are some areas with

sand movements. But from a geographic perspective, over time the desert has been relatively stable in this region.

Having spent a significant amount of time planning, and building partnerships with local agencies, the Great

Green Wall initiative is beginning to report positive early results. It is reported that the improvements in land quality

and economic opportunities in Mali may help restrict terrorism in the country, where starvation and poverty have

worsened the political and religious problems.

32.What is Jean-Marc Sinnassamy's job?

A. A GEF officer.

B. A program manager.

C. A United Nations leader.

D. An environmental expert.

33.Why are the two misunderstandings of the project mentioned?

A. To show the disadvantages of the project.

B. To gain more support on social media.

C.To help the readers better understand the work.

D.To explain the reason why the Sahara Desert is stable.

学科 网(北 京)股 份有限 公司

34.What can we learn about the Great Green Wall initiative from the last paragraph?

A. Its achievement is limited now.

B. It could bring great social impact to the local people.

C. It involves people from all corners of the world.

D.It saves many countries from the threat of war.

35.Which can be the best title for the text?

A.Great Green Wall

B. Land degradation

C.Forest and Landscape Restoration

D.Southward Expansion of the Desert

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Time management and stress are related because managing time helps to manage stress. 36 They can reduce

their stress by using smart time management techniques to help them get their work and other responsibilities

completed in a more timely manner. 37

If a person has a great deal of responsibilities, whether at work, at home or both, then it would likely benefit that

person to keep track of those responsibilities. 38 Tasks, projects, meetings and other required responsibilities can be

listed and prioritized as urgent, important or optional, with their due dates listed, as well.

Some people experience stress in part because of a lack of time-management skills that leads to feelings of being

overwhelmed. Calendars also are a helpful tool for keeping up with important dates, tasks and meetings.39 Being able

to look at their schedule a week or month at a time can help people realize when they should begin working on

projects and when they should have them completed.

40 People often feel overwhelmed when they have to begin a new project, especially a large one. Instead of

thinking of large projects as one large task, it can be helpful to break them down into smaller steps that must be

completed along the way and to put tentative due dates for each step. In this way, they are less likely to feel stressed

about the whole project and more likely to be successful when completing it.

A.Breaking down large projects can also reduce stress.

B.It is also helpful to consult a professional organizer.

C.People can use them to help plan out their tasks.

D.Electronic calendars are more convenient than desk or wall calendars.

E. People often experience stress due to a lack of time management skills.

F. A notebook full of daily to-do lists can help a person see what need to be done each day.

G.In other words, the better one manages his or her time, the less stress he or she should have.

My cousin glanced at the Delaware River. We can handle it. Follow me and we'll reach the pickup point. Are

you scared, Ben? Jude sat at the back of the canoe. He liked being in control, as it was his canoe. The problem was

he needed to listen to me, the bowman.

Jude's words shook my confidence. After years of canoeing, we knew our strong sides. I paddled on the right,

while Jude took the left. We smoothly entered the swift current in the middle of the river. I wasn't afraid of canoeing

with Jude. We had been doing it since we were able to walk and had completed this section with our dads three times

before.

We moved swiftly, water splashing over the bow and onto my shoes. I trembled. It was going to be an

exhilarating ride. We need to steer right, I shouted. I can see, Ben, Jude shouted back. Pull left!

He could see? I glanced behind me. Jude was on one knee, looking ahead. I switched hands on the paddle to
