It's Paris Fashion Week and the streets of the city are filled with designers, models and
journalists. Among the crowds, eagle-eyed experts are taking careful notes. Their job is to detect
emerging trends. Their notes will instantly be added to selected “trend forecasts”, which will be
sold to designers, who will use them to inspire new pieces.Traditionally, these fashion forecasters
have relied only on such methods to make predictions.
But as artificial intelligence ( AI)technologies have become increasingly powerful in the
last decade, forecasting agencies are now turning to machine learning for help.
This is all welcome news for an industry worth about $2 trillion globally. Forecasts can
have a big influence on the fashion industry's carbon footprint ,which is responsible for at least 4%
of all worldwide emissions.Designers will produce more of what will actually sell - at the
moment,25% of fashion products are unsalable, or not sold. Besides, using AI tools that can
analyze millions of posts from around the world allows designers to look at fashion trends more
globally.
But designers often feel insecure about relying just on the data provided by AI.“A few
years ago, there were big indicators on social media of yellow being a trend, says Francesca
Muston, vice president of a trend forecasting company.“And if you had followed completely the
social media data gathered by AI models, yellow pieces would seem to be a good investment. But
how many people are really going to wear a bright yellow coat? That's a brave fashion choice. AI
tools don't have their own aesthetic (审美的)viewpoint so they may not be able to satisfy people's
desire for newness. That's why we maintain a very strong creative viewpoint in our forecasting
with a team of industry experts, says Muston
Dr Michal Koren, a researcher, ways, “The role of human experts in identifying trends will
continue to be crucial even as AI and data-driven models become more accurate.
24. What is the purpose of the notes taken by the experts?
A. To report the news about Paris Fashion Week.
B. To help them make fashion predictions.
C. To compare different design methods.
D. To collect information about designers.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss?
A. The various benefits of using Al tools to predict trends.
B. The high environmental costs of the fashion industry.
C. The importance of looking at fashion more globally.
D. The serious problem of unsalable fashion products.
26. Why does Muston mention the trend of yellow predicted a few years ago?
A. To explain why people dislike some new trends.
B. To show AI fashion predictions are not always reliable.
C. To describe the recent changes in people's fashion choices.
D. To prove the key role of social media in fashion forecasting.
27. Which statement might both Muston and Koren agree with?
A. Machine learning is more creative than human experts.
B. Many human trend forecasters will be unemployed.
C. It is possible for Al to have its own fashion sense.
D. AI tools will not replace human trend forecasters.

In a natural disaster - a hurricane , a flood, a volcanic eruption, or other catastrophes -minutes
and even seconds of warning can make the difference between life and death. Because of
this, scientists are working to use the latest technologies to predict when and where disasters will
happen. They are also studying how to best analyze and communicate this information once it is
obtained.
On September 29 , 1998 , Hurricane Georges made landfall in Biloxi , Mississippi,after
damaging Haiti, the Dominican Republic,Puerto Rico, and several islands of the Caribbean badly
with heavy rain and winds up to 160 km per hour. Few people lost their lives along the Gulf Coast
of the United States, although hundreds died in the Caribbean. This was a very different result
from 1900's, when a powerful Gulf Coast hurricane made an unexpected direct attack on
Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people.Vastly improved hurricane warning systems at the
end of the 20th century explained the different circumstances -residents of Galveston had no
advance warning that a storm was approaching, while residents of Biloxi had been warned days in
advance, allowing for extensive safety precautions(预防措施)、 At the same time people in Biloxi
were thankful for the advance warning, but some residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were less
satisfied.A day before Georges made landfall, forecasters were prediction that the hurricane had a
good chance of striking New Orleans.Emergency management officials must begin to arrange
evacuation( 疏 散 )well before a storm struck. But evacuation cost money. The mayor of New
Orleans estimated that his city's preparations for Georges cost more than 50 million. After Georges
missed New Orleans, some residents questioned the value of the hurricane forecasts in the face of
such high costs.
The different views on the early warning of Hurricane Georges show some of the
complexity( 复 杂 性 )related to predicting disasters.Disaster prediction is a process of providing
scientific information for the government officials and other decision-makers who must respond to
those predictions.
27. What is the purpose of disaster prediction according to the passage?
A. To save people's lives.
B.To find out the cause of disasters.
C. To prevent natural disasters from happening.
D.To apply advanced technology to disaster prediction.
29. In which area did a hurricane cause the most deaths?
A. Biloxi. B. New Orleans. C. Galveston. D. Puerto Rico.
30. Why were the city residents of New Orleans unsatisfied?
A. Because the hurricane warning arrived rather late.
B. Because the forecast hurricane did not hit the city.
C. Because they suffered a heavy hurricane attack.
D.Because their preparations were made in vain.
31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The importance and uncertainty of disaster prediction.
B. The benefits and preparations of disaster prediction.
C.Technological advances in disaster prediction.
D.The different ways of disaster prediction.

The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to
reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content.
But do these efforts resolve mental health issues, or are they simply applying a band-aid to a
wound?
It's a small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling,a psychologist who works
with youth who experience anxiety disorders.“ Even if you remove the likes, there continue to be
opportunities for comparisons and feedback. People still can compare themselves to others , and
people still can post comments.
Social platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even
physical ailments(小病).This puts a large amount of the population at an increased risk of feeling
anxious , depressed, or ill over their social media use. But what makes users come back for more
even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“When the outcome is unpredictable , the behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot
machine(老虎机):if game players knew they were never going to get money by playing the game,
then they never would play, says Sperling. “The idea of a potential future reward keeps the
machines in use. The same goes for social media sites. One does not know how many likes a
picture will get , who will like the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown
outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites. ”
FOMO -fear of missing out - also impacts the youth greatly. Teenagers hope to keep track of
friends' activities. If everyone else is using social media sites, and if you don't join in, there's
concern that you'll miss chats, jokes, connections,or invitations. Missing experiences can create
anxiety and depression. When people look online and see they're excluded from an activity, it can
affect thoughts and feelings, and can affect them physically.
In addition to limiting likes,as Instagram has done, Sperling suggests social platforms
consider decreasing mass sharing. They might function more as messaging services by
highlighting one-on-one communications. Regardless of how likely social media giants are to
change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
32. What does Sperling think of Instagram's measure?
A.It's strict. B. It's limited. C.It's objective. D. It's conservative.
33.What is probably the major reason for social media addiction?
A. Need for self-expression,
B. Desire for constant recognition,
C. Expectation of possible surprises,
D. lack of interest in real-life activities.
34. What does Sperling alvise social platforms to do in the last paragraph?
A. Restrict their service scales.
B. Decrease one-on-one interactions
C. Limit the time users spend on them.
D. Shift the focus from sharing to messaging.
35.What might the author continue talking about?
A. Redesign of social media platforms. B. Changes made by social media giants
C. Strategies for individuals' self-control. D. Impact of social media on mental health,

Once a niche (小众的)sport, rock climbing has become a mainstream pleasure enjoyed by
many. 36 However, with rock climbing's rise in popularity, the amazing biodiversity
sustained by cliff ecosystems is under pressure. To relieve this problem, there are numerous helpful
acts you can do.
The presence of climbers at the cliff where binds are nesting can cause them to abandon their
chicks to starvation. You should check if there are any bird nesting restrictions in the areas where
you plan to climb. 37 And some organizations have an online database you can check.
Sometimes climbers also remove plants and soil when establishing a route that has not been
climbed before so that it becomes more suitable for climbing. 38 Work with other route
developers and conservationists to understand the potential impact of route development on the
plants.
39 In the early days, climbers often collected data about the species and geography
they encountered as part of an adventure. It is now much easier to contribute to science as a
climber.Much of this comes down to the fact that each of us carries a tiny computer that can
smoothly capture images. location , and sound and associate them with a timestamp - our
smartphones!
Actually, in many places, climber representative bodies are taking great steps to ensure
climbing is managed sustainably. This involves cooperating with the authorities of natural
parks, and conservation organizations so that agreements can be reached that minimize the impact
of climbing on the environment while keeping regulations to a minimum. These organizations
often have limited funds with which to achieve these goals and tend to rely on the support of
volunteers. 40
A. You can help by becoming a citizen scientist.
B. This information is usually available in climbing guidebooks.
C. This can wipe out the cliff ecosystem that was there previously.
D. Why not get in touch with one that inspires you and ask what you can do?
E. Keeping existing routes in good condition avoids the damage to vegetation.
F. These data can then be accessed by scientists to avoid environmental issues on cliffs.
G. The natural world offers an exciting adventure through beautiful environments filled with
wildlife.

On the windy day, a young lady was waiting for her flight at an airport. She was leaving for
another city because she got employed there. It was said that her new boss was a typical English
gentleman- polite ,modest, humorous and considerate. She was excited as well as a little nervous
about her new life.
Having to wait a long time before her flight , the lady hunted for a book in the airport
shops, bought a packet of cookies and found a place to rest. She produced a book and started to
read.
Although absorbed in her book , she happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold
as he could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between them. Educated to be well
-mannered, she tried to ignore it to avoid an argument. But to show that she was the owner, she
started to take cookies from that bag too. Unfortunately, the man didn't get that hint, since he
didn't stop grabbing the cookies.
“ How annoying! She thought. As the greedy cookie thief kept eating, the woman
munched(大声咀嚼) some cookies and watched the clock.
She was getting angrier as the minutes went by, thinking, “If I weren't so nice, I would
blacken his eyes. ”With each cookie she took , he took one, too; when only one was left, she
wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half.
He offered her a half, and ate the other. She grabbed it from him, glared at him and thought,Oh,
brother. This guy has some nerve and he is so rude! Why didn't he even show any gratefulness?”
She had never known when she had been so annoyed, and sighed in relief when her flight
was called. She gathered her belongings and moved to the gate quickly, refusing to look back at
the rude thief. She boarded the plane, sank in her seat, and looked for her book , which was almost
complete.
