Entering adulthood is an important step in everyone’s life. It means that a young person
must soon leave childishness behind and start to shoulder grown-up responsibilities.
In Germany, “Jugendfeier” is a coming-of-age ceremony for 14-year-olds. They go to
school to prepare for the occasion, studying topics, such as cultural respect and social
responsibility, which will help them become worthy citizens. The hope is that the young people
taking part in the ceremony will take on these values for themselves.
In Latin America, “quinceanera” is a celebration for girls on their 15th birthday, marking
a girl’s entry into womanhood. In the past, “quinceanera” was intended to ready girls for
marriage and they were taught cooking, sewing, and other household skills in preparation. Today,
it’s similar to how one’s 18th birthday is considered an important day in other cultures.
In India, the sacred thread ceremony is performed when a boy is grown-up. He is given
three sacred threads representing three promises he makes: to respect knowledge, to respect his
parents and to respect society. After the ceremony, the child, traditionally, leaves his family to
live with a Guru (teacher). At this point the boy becomes “twice-born”—first his physical birth,
and second his intellectual birth through a teacher’s care.
In Vanuatu, young boys come of age by jumping off a 98-foot-tall tower with a
bungee-like rope tied to their ankles, just barely preventing them from hitting the ground. At the
ceremony, the diver’s mother will hold something representing his childhood, and after the jump
the item will be thrown away, representing the end of childhood. He is now a man, ready to
protect the family.
21. What is the shared expectation of the four coming-of-age ceremonies?
A. Having respect for knowledge
B. Getting ready to raise a family
C. Acquiring cross-cultural awareness
D. Developing a sense of responsibility
22. Which app might appeal to people entering adulthood in Germany?
A. B. C. D.
23 . In which place are things with special meanings given to the young attendants?
A. Germany. B. Latin America. C. India. D. Vanuatu.

According to a recent study, laughter and joy may not be unique to humans. Ancestral
forms of play and laughter existed in other animals long before they did in humans. Jaak
Panksepp, a professor of psychobiology at Washington State University and the author of the
study, says, “Human laughter has deep roots in our animal past.”
3
{#{QQABIYCUogiAAAIAABgCUQXqCgKQkBCCCCoOwFAMIAABAAFABAA=}#}
While humans are the only creatures that tell jokes, it has long been suspected that some
animals like to laugh. In 1872, Charles Darwin pointed out that “very many kinds of monkeys,
when pleased, make a sound, clearly analogous to our laughter.” In an experiment Panksepp had
performed earlier, he found that when chimpanzees (黑猩猩) play, they make noises strikingly
like human laughter, and that dogs have a similar response.
Panksepp notes that children who are too young to laugh at jokes are likely to laugh during
noisy plays. Panksepp found that when young rats (老鼠) are playing, they also make sounds -
they chirp ( 发 唧 唧 声 ), although people can’t hear them. These chirps are far too high for
humans to hear. Researchers must use special electronic receivers that change the chirps to
sounds that humans can hear.
In studying laughter, scientists have focused mostly on related issues - humor, personality,
health benefits, social theory - rather than laughter itself. New research, however, shows that
circuits (电路) for laughter exist in very ancient parts of the human brain. The ability to laugh
appears early in childhood, as anyone who has seen a baby laugh knows.
Some scientists say that other mammals, just like humans, have many feelings. “The
recognition by neuroscientists that the brain mechanisms (机制) causing pain, pleasure and fear
are the same in humans and other mammals shows our similarity to other species and extremely
important.” said Tecumseh Fitch, a psychology lecturer at the University of St Andrews in
Scotland. Science has traditionally held that humour is only a human quality, and many
scientists believe that more research is required before rats’ chirping sounds can be considered
real laughter. Panksepp believes that, through a study of laughter in rats, the human sense of
humour can be more fully understood.
24. What is the finding of the recent study?
A. Animals can also play jokes on others.
B. Animals can hardly express happiness.
C. Human laughter has its origin in animal sounds.
D. Humans actually developed from ancient animals.
25. What does the underlined word “analogous” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Similar. B. Special. C. Familiar. D. Important.
26. What can be learned about rats’ chirps?
A. They are beyond human hearing range.
B. They sound like young kids’ sounds.
C. They are made during rats’ fighting.
D. They may affect human feelings.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Mammals have a particularly sensitive brain area.
B. Humans have fully understood animals’ behaviours.
C. People and animals share some emotional responses
D. Rats’ chirps and human laughter are basically the same.

People trained to detect lies often rely on multiple signs, such as eye contact, length of
responses and the details in what people say, but studies have shown that assessing a wide range
of behavioral information can make it harder to decide if someone is lying. Bruno Verschuere at
the University of Amsterdam and his colleagues wondered whether solely focusing on the detail
of statements could provide more consistent results.
To test this idea, researchers asked 44 students to go for a walk or steal from a mock (模仿
的) crime. Students were instructed to lie if they committed the fake theft. Next, the researchers
recruited 171 people to watch six truthful and six deceptive ( 欺 骗 的 ) interviews from these
recordings, ranking interviewees’ eye contact and detail level.
The results revealed that both truth-tellers and liars averted ( 转 移 ) their gaze a similar
amount, but truthful statements were substantially more detailed than deceptive ones, suggesting
the latter is a more useful way to tell that someone is lying.
The researchers then asked 405 people to judge the true nature of six truthful and six
deceptive statements randomly chosen from the interviews. Around half of the participants used
multiple cues to identify liars. The remaining participants solely ranked the level of detail in
answers on a scale of 1 to 10, with 6 or above counting as truthful. Those using multiple cues
distinguished lies from the truth 59% of the time, while those relying solely on detail achieved
66%.
“Our take is that using just one cue can provide a simpler way to judge lies from the truth,”
says Verschuere. Nevertheless, in the real world, you would probably need to confirm the
accuracy of statements through extra further investigations or follow-up questions, he says.
28. Bruno Verschuere and his colleagues conducted the research to confirm that ______.
A. behavioral information played a vital role in finding out the truth.
B. people should be trained to detect lies by referring to multiple cues.
C. truth tellers and liars shared something in common when performing the task.
D. it’s relatively easier to identify liars by relying only on the detail of statements.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Liars turned away their eyes more often than truth-tellers.
B. Truthful statements included considerably more details than deceptive ones.
C. It’s difficult for participants to detect liars by using multiple cues like eye contact.
D. Participants who relied on one cue can distinguish lies from the truth faultlessly.
30. What did Verschuere think of the real-life application of his research?
A. It had some limitations. B. It made no sense.
C. It could be perfectly applied. D. It had no potential market.
31. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce readers to the classification of lies.
B. To encourage readers to apply the results in real life.
C. To warn readers of psychological harm of telling a lie.
D. To inform readers of scientific findings on detecting liars.

With governments across the world supporting native languages, it may seem like people in
power are finally beginning to accept linguistic diversity (语言多样性). But there’s still a long
way to go.
In Mexico, for example, speakers of native languages still face challenges that Spanish
speakers may not. According to Mexico News Daily, speakers of native languages in the state of
Chiapas are still influenced by Castilianization practices, which serve to change these
communities to mainly Spanish-speaking ones. Although Mexico is home to many native
languages, like Nahuatl and Mixtec, most of these languages have become endangered because
of Spanish’s predominance (主导地位).
A recent survey done by researchers at Western Kentucky University tries to explore the
public’s attitudes toward native language education in the country. Although the Mexican
government’s efforts to protect native languages have been far from satisfactory, it appears that
the Mexican public is generally quite supportive of efforts to revitalize (使恢复生机) native
languages.
87% of respondents (调查对象) to the survey said they agreed with the statement that “the
presence of native people is important to Mexican culture. ” The researchers also asked
respondents about their thoughts on teaching native languages and English in school. Most of the
respondents agreed that it was important to teach these as subjects in school, though native
languages received a bit less support than English (88.4% of respondents supported teaching
English in school compared to 70.8% for native languages).
The researchers noted that the Mexican government has made some efforts in recent years
to support native languages, such as the National Institute of Native Languages, which provides
a variety of online courses to help people learn native languages. Now, Nahuatl is one of the few
languages native to Mexico that is not endangered — most of the country’s native languages
have less than 100,000 native speakers.
32. What do we know about speakers of native languages in Chiapas?
A. They are encouraged to speak Spanish.
B. They are treated the same as Spanish speakers.
C. They have made a challenge to Spanish’s predominance.
D. They have had great success in protecting their language.
33. What does the recent survey find about the Mexican public?
A. They care little about native languages.
B. They want to keep native languages alive.
C. They think native languages are more important than English.
D. They support schools specializing in teaching native languages.
34. Why did the researchers mention the National Institute of Native Languages?
A. To recognize the Mexican government’s efforts.
B. To share its creative way of protecting Nahuatl.
C. To introduce it as a language training center.
6
{#{QQABIYCUogiAAAIAABgCUQXqCgKQkBCCCCoOwFAMIAABAAFABAA=}#}

During the summer vacation, a mother planned an exciting trip with her two children. They
were set to explore a famous tourist spot, famous for its breath-taking landscapes and attractions.
Little did they know that their adventure would take an unexpected turn.
As they arrived at the destination, they were greeted by a sea of people. The place was
overflowing with tourists from all over the globe. Excitement filled the air as families began
their sightseeing adventures, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.
Eager to begin their own adventure, the mother, holding the hands of her two children, dove
into the crowd. However, among the crowded army of tourists, fate had its own plans in store. In
the chaos of the massive crowd, the younger son, unaware of the chaos unfolding around him,
somehow managed to wander off, unknowingly leaving his family behind.
Suddenly, the mother realized that her younger child was no longer beside her. Panic seized
her heart, and a sense of helplessness occupied her. She desperately called out her son’s name,
her voice trembling with fear. Tears streamed down her face as she scanned the vast sea of
people for her son, but there was no sign of him.
In a state of despair, the mother sought assistance from fellow tourists. Compassionate
minds instantly joined in the search, spreading word about the lost child throughout the area.
Strangers joined in the search, their hearts filled with empathy for the anxious mother.
