The STAR Eco Station is an environmental science museum, a wildlife rescue

center, and a shelter for endangered and illegally-traded foreign animals confiscated

(没收) by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It carries out the mission “Preservation

through Education” by educating visitors about the preservation of the environment

and the inter-dependence of all living things.

Field trips

STAR Eco Station hosts field trips for schools and camps throughout Southern

California. Each field trip lasts two hours, consisting of a one-hour gathering and a

one-hour tour of the facility, with lessons associated with California State Science

Standards.

Throughout the field trip, students learn about the latest developments in

environmental protection and the ways in which wildlife interacts with various

ecosystems. The students also receive an up-close and hands-on experience with our

rescued foreign wildlife. The tour includes different environmental exhibits that

showcase the ways students can help protect animals in the wild.

Field trips are offered on weekdays only, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. or 12 p.m.-2 p.m.

The rate is $6 per visitor, both child and adult, with a $120 minimum. We offer one

free adult per 10 children for groups of 40 or more. Maximum capacity is 120 people

per field trip.

Public tours

Guided tours of the STAR Eco Station introduce visitors to over two hundred

rescued foreign wildlife. Each tour is led by an Eco Station staff member, and features

fun animal facts, hands-on animal encounters, surprising rescue stories, environmental

exhibits, and original approaches to going green. Visitors may only see the animals on

a guided tour, for both your safety and the safety of our animals.

The guided tour lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. Public tours are offered on

Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (last tour begins at 3 p.m.). Our guided

public tours start every hour on the hour. Visitors are served on a first-come,

first-served basis. No reservations are required. However, tours may sell out. We

If a president, a philosopher, and one of the best-selling writers credited the same

secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was

something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s

what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any

第 4页,共 12页

worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens:

“If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”

Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and

producing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent

more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking

outside —compared with on a treadmill(跑步机)—produces the most novel and

highest-quality ideas.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking is

triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking —with your dog, a

friend, or alone —feeds creative thinking.

The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with a

walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going

outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone,

which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk

through a tree-filled neighborhood. You can walk through a park and observe people

joking or birds singing. Being inside, you're more likely to be lifeless, which means

you don’t have enough energy to wonder or create things.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with

walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Turn off your phone

and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and

natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a

puddle.

24. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?

A.By providing background. B. By borrowing phrases from great minds.

C. By giving definition. D. By presenting well-known examples.

25. The underlined word in paragraph 4 means something ___________.

A. causing a change B. stopping progress

C. drawing attention D. interrupting creativity

26. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Nature exploration improves fitness.

B. Walking on a treadmill brings more energy.

C. Working indoors makes people less creative.

D. Familiar surroundings encourage novel ideas.

27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

第 5页,共 12页

A. Exercise in Nature. B. Train Your Brain.

C. Develop Your Creativity. D. Walk for Wonder.

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow,

London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the

city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss

and out of place. Until I made a discovery.

Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British

skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I

loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And

my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don’t worry about it.

Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam, I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve

in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later,

when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: “Safe! Safe!

Safe!” And that’s what mattered —landing tricks, being a good skater.

When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but

the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I’d given it up.

When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to

Southbank, spending hours there. I’ve traveled back several times since, most recently

this past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watch

the skaters. Weaving among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way

to the beam. Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded(滑) up to the

beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I

caught a few of his glances. “I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then,

slowly, he began to nod his head. “Safe, man. Safe.”

“Yeah,” I said. “Safe.”

28. What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London?

A. He felt disappointed. B. He gave up his hobby.

C. He liked the weather there. D. He had disagreements with his family.

29. What do the underlined words “Safe! Safe! Safe!” probably mean?

A. Be careful! B. Well done! C. No way! D. Don’t worry!

30. Why did the author like to spend time in Southbank when he returned to London?

A. To join the skateboarding. B. To make new friends.

C. To learn more tricks. D. To relive his childhood days.

第 6页,共 12页

31. What message does the author seem to tell us in the text?

A. Children should learn a second language.

B. Sport is necessary for children’s health.

C. Children need a sense of belonging.

D. Seeing the world is a must for children.

D

It is not always easy to understand animal behavior, especially when it’s related

to other species. For decades, researchers have observed orcas (虎鲸) attacking and

even killing porpoises (鼠海豚) in the Pacific Northwest. But it confuses people that

these expert hunters don’t eat them. So what’s going on here?

Southern Resident orcas are a different population of orcas that live in the Pacific

Northwest. The lives of these orcas are closely tied to those of the salmon. So if the

salmon disappear, so too will the orca. But despite their preference for the salmon,

these whales are known to attack and kill other smaller marine mammals (海洋哺乳

动物) without eating them.

To better understand this unusual behavior, an international team of researchers

did a research and examined more than 60 years of recorded interactions between

Southern Resident orcas and porpoises in the Salish Sea.

“Why don’t the Southern Residents just eat porpoises instead?” Deborah Giles of

Wild Orca said. “It’s because fish-eating killer whales have a completely different

ecology and culture from orcas that eat marine mammals. So we must conclude that

their interactions with porpoises serve a different purpose, but this purpose has only

been a guess until now.”

According to Giles and her colleagues’ work, the orca may be attacking the

porpoise as a form of social play. It is possible these large animals may be attacking

the smaller mammals as a way to build up social cohesion (凝聚力). Similarly, the

behavior could represent hunting practice, by which the orcas are practising their

teamwork and cooperation skills for hunting salmons. Finally, the behavior could be a

way of “mismothering” where the orca see the smaller porpoises as weaker or ill and

so in need of care.

This work highlights the need for the protection of salmon populations in the area

as well as the orcas’ entire hunting range. The threat to the salmon’s future is not just

a threat to a single species, but an entire ecosystem.

32. Why did an international team of researchers do their study?

第 7页,共 12页

A. To find out a way to protect porpoises.

B. To make sure the reason why some orcas attack salmon.

C. To solve the problem of marine mammals’ living environment.

D. To better understand the strange behavior of Southern Resident orcas.

33. What is Southern Resident orcas’ favorite food?

A. the porpoise. B. the marine mammal. C. the salmon. D. the whale.

34. According to Giles’ research, which may be a reason for the orcas’ attacking

porpoises?

A. It’s a kind of social play with porpoises.

B. It is a practice to kill porpoises as their food.

C. The orcas may dislike the smaller porpoises.

D. It’s a way for the orcas to practice their hunting skills.

35. What probably is the writer’s attitude to the research?

A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Uncertain.
