Miss England, Jessica Gagen, is not the ordinary beauty pageant(选美)winner. She just earned an impressive
title, rocket scientist.
The 27-year-old girl just graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and
she has set her sights on being an astronaut. But winning her title just a few months before completing her degree was
no easy task. She is the first rocket scientist to be crowned Miss England.
Gagen was able to balance between her competition and her schoolwork, but the stress of doing both left her with
chest pains and insomnia(失眠). However, she didn’t give up.
“The way to get to this point was a rock y five years in the making, and I faced challenges before I’d even
begun,” Gagen told The Daily Mail. “I think it’s important that today’s youth know that sometimes things don’t go
entirely as planned, and that’s perfectly OK.”
Before starting at the university, Gagen studied a year in physics while working at weekends because she didn’t
have all the courses she needed for the program. She began studying at the university in 2019 and when the pandemic
hit, all the coursework went online. She did this while working full time at night.
“I’d return home to do that day’s online lectures and homework and then stop at 8 pm to get ready for bed, before
the cycle would repeat. I was constantly knackered, but I was a mature student and had bills to pay.”
During the course of her studies, Gagen saw that there were very few females in engineering and decided to
make it her duty to promote careers in science for women and girls on her social media. This idea led to her being
scouted(物色) for the Miss England contest. In 2022 Gagen was accepted into a Master’s program and she entered
the Miss England pageant and won.
24.What did Gagen desire to do upon graduation?
A.Work as an engineer. B.Win a beauty contest.
C.Continue rocket research. D.Become a spacewoman.
25.What does Gagen want to convey in paragraph 4?
A.The youth should face the challenges bravely.
B.Plans do not change based on human will.
C.Feeling a bit uncomfortable seems normal.
D.Today’s youth should perform perfectly.
26.Why did Gagen work at night?
A.To support females. B.To earn a living.
C.To enter the contest. D.To promote free careers.
27.What does the underlined word “knackered” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Simple-minded. B.Confused. C.Worn-out. D.Embarrassed.
C
Many people live with chronic(慢性)pain, and there’re complex reasons for it. Now a new study researcher
Laura Case of the University of California, San Diego, co-authoring with Jennifer Baumgartner, suggests a new
potential influence on pain: feeling socially connected.
This new study reanalyzed measures collected in an earlier study, in which a group of chronic pain sufferers had
been randomly arranged an intervention(干预)shown to reduce pain(sleeping with a heavily-weighted blanket)
or to a control condition(sleeping with a slightly-weighted blanket). After sleeping with their blankets for a week,
changes in people’s pain levels were assessed.
In the earlier study, the pain sufferers had also reported on their anxiety, levels of loneliness, and sense of social
connectedness—not how many social connections they had, but how generally close they were to other people and
how strongly they experienced a sense of belonging. But these hadn’t all been analyzed to see how they related to pain
and pain relief from the blankets. That’s where the new study came in.
The new findings showed that people who were more socially connected experienced less pain than those who
were less socially connected. After taking into account differences in how much pain relief the sufferers expected and
how painful they felt in the beginning, those who were socially disconnected felt more pain relief from the weighted
blanket than from the lighter blanket, while more socially connected people received equal pain relief from both
blankets.
These findings show that having a sense of belonging provides some level of protection against pain. Why?
Socially connected people probably feel safer and less anxious, says Baumgartner, because they know they can
depend on others for support when they’re hurting. Besides, positive social touch—like receiving a friendly hug or
massage—has been shown to reduce pain feel, and people who’re more socially connected likely experience more of
those types of touch, Case adds.
Their study adds to a growing body of research showing how important social connectedness and social touch are
for our health and happiness—something that’s been getting more attention in recent years.
28.What did the new study mainly focus on?
A.The participants’ pain levels. B.The participants’ similar sense of belonging.
C.The different interventions. D.The effects of social connections on pain.
29.What can be learnt from the new study?
A.The weighted blanket benefited those socially disconnected a lot.
B.People’s initial pain levels had few effects on the participants.
C.People having more social connections experienced no pain.
D.Being socially disconnected worsened people’s pain.
30.What does Case probably suggest people do in paragraph 5?
A.Compete with each other. B.Avoid too much touch.
C.Hug their friends more. D.Control their feelings.
31.From which section of the newspaper is the text probably taken?
A.Technology. B.Health. C.Environment. D.People.

What do people associate with the Metropolitan Museum of Art called the Met? For most, this New York
museum is a treasure trove(宝库)of beautifully-scheduled artistic expression. After all, its collections include 1.5
million works of art from prehistory to the present.
But since September 9,2023, as Hyperallergic reports, the Met is also the setting for a new, super-creative center
for kids aged 3-11 and their families, named “81st St Studio”, which sets out to help children understand the materials
used to make art. Coming in through the entrance, visitors see tree trunks, cardboard and a carved wooden screen
among other examples. Visitors can participate in activities such as woodblock carving and drum making.
According to Heidi Holder, Chai r of the Met’s education department, there’s no contradiction in this new
attempt. She recently said the Met is a science institution. As she explains, “We have three big parts of ourselves: our
scientific research, our conservation and our art.” As Holder explains, even when objects created hundreds of years
earlier come in, a scientific understanding of the materials used will help people better understand the art itself.
The exhibit is rich with art and science activities to encourage self-expression. There’re no traditional glass
exhibition cupboards here. Instead, the 3,500-square-foot center is filled with seven stations that encourage visitors to
explore them using all their senses. As Holder said, “It’s an open space where you can create your own path. You can
learn at your own pace. You can take risks, be curious, have fun, and discover things.”
A music installation(装置), for instance, helps kids understand how materials influence sound. It consists of
several creative music-making devices. Curious young visitors can pull open small, drawer-like boxes. For example,
an accordion lets out an airy sound as the opening and closing motion compresses(压缩) the air inside it.
In agreement with its ambitions to serve as a community center, the 81st St Studio is free to enter for children
and their caregivers, no museum ticket required, during regular Met hours.
32.What is the purpose of the 81st St Studio?
A.To assist children in learning about art materials.
B.To encourage participators to be more creative.
C.To help children to create some works of art.
D.To ask people to concentrate on conservation.
33.What is Holder’s attitude towards opening the 81st St Studio?
A.Negative. B.Approving. C.Uncaring. D.Uncertain.
34.What can we infer from Holder’s words in paragraph 4?
A.The 81st St Studio has a limited space. B.Kids will be faced with some difficulties.
C.Kids are free to explore the 81st St Studio. D.Lots of exhibits are not easy to discover.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Met Is Best for Art Education B.Scientific Activities Are Based on Art
C.Artistic Creation Comes from Inspiration D.Art and Science Can Meet for Education

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Why is it so hard to be truly honest with yourself? Sometimes it’s because you don’t know what you want. Other
times you do know what you want, but you’re too afraid to admit it. 36 Quite often, the truth can be very ugly
and painful, particularly if you’ve spent much time lying to yourself about things big and small.
37 If you can’t rely on yourself because you aren’t in tune with your truth, you’ll end up making yourself
painful. Thus, you must be honest with yourself to figure out what you want out of life so you can actually put forth
the effort to build it. Here are three ideas that help you become more honest with yourself.
Take time to reflect on your day, every day. What did you do right or wrong? Were there any points where you
didn’t act in tune with your actual feelings and desires? 38 Considering how you acted throughout the day can
help you sort through your feelings and actions of the day if you struggle to be honest with yourself.
Acknowledge your feelings. Your feelings are signposts on your journey to truth, peace of mind, and happiness.
39 So consider how your experiences and decisions make you feel, and understand why you feel the way you do.
This will help you get in tune with yourself and make better decisions about a situation.
Accept that you can’t know everything. You can’t possibly know everything about everybody. Therefore, it’s
absolutely normal for you to do something wrong. So don’t make excuses for yourself. 40
A.How will you do better?
B.This isn’t a matter of being smart or wise enough.
C.But why is honesty with yourself so important?
D.Could you have spoken up and advocated for yourself better?
E.They’re trying to point you toward a path that makes sense for you.
F.Maybe you just don’t want to accept reality because the truth is unpleasant.
G.You just need to be honest with yourself when you make those mistakes.

My family was poor so I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to purchase my
fourth-grade class picture. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher,
Mrs. Cornell, stood to the side. She kept strict rules, but I loved her. I held my one-and-only class picture like a new
teddy bear. I wanted to be a person like her.
As the years passed, I’d run across that fourth-grade picture. It always reminded me that I’d wanted to become a
teacher. Even after getting married, I would still long for the teaching career I never got to have.
Once my children were all in school. I had some time to myself. The eagerness to teach was still there, but I was
now forty-two. I hadn’t been a student for over twenty years. Having only my husband’s income made money an issue
as well.
Anyway, I managed to come up with enough money for my first term. With a step of faith, I moved forward.
College proved to be a blessing and a challenge. I attended lessons and challenged myself to learn new things. My
days and nights were spent on difficult textbooks. I would look at the picture when I was tired. Gradually, I found
myself enjoying the classes.
One day, a professor mentioned a grant(补助金)was available to those going into education upon their
graduation. Would they even consider giving the money to someone of my age? I had a few good years left in me, but
I couldn’t compete with the youngsters who had a lifetime of teaching ahead of them. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I
began the lengthy application process followed by an interview. All I could do was wait and hope.
Several weeks later, I received a call from my professor telling me I’d been selected as a candidate for the
program. I’d have to invest some volunteer hours as required, but my college expenses would be covered. I hung up
the phone with teary eyes. I couldn’t believe my dream of teaching was becoming a reality. I continued studying hard
through the next three years.
