Old and historical cinemas are all around us and yet so unnoticed. A new photobook

uncovers their often overlooked beauty.

Loew’s Palace Theatre

Originally opened as the Poli’s Palace Theatre in 1922 by architect Thomas W. Lamb, it

was one of a double theatre complex along with the neighbouring Poli’s Majestic Theatre. In

1934, both theatres were taken over by Loew’s and operated as film theatres. In the late

1970s, an attempt to turn the building into a Christian Revival Centre never succeeded. The

theatre is presently vacant and awaiting restoration.

Metropolitan Opera House

Originally founded as the Philadelphia Opera House in 1908, it was designed by local

architect William H. McElfatrick, who was in charge of the design of 40 theatres in his

career. The Philadelphia Opera House was designed for opera manager Oscar Hammerstein

as his ninth opera house. In 1910, it was sold to the Metropolitan Opera of New York City

and was renamed the Met. Through the 1920s, it showed silent films in addition to hosting

various opera companies. In the late 1930s, it became a ballroom, and in the 1940s a sports

3

area for basketball, wrestling, and boxing events. It finally closed in 1954 and was turned into

a church.

Robin’s Theatre

Opened in 1923, it had 1,500 seats, and was designed by architects I. J. Goldston and

Detroit-based C. Howard Crane. It was operated by The Robins Theatre Enterprises Co., a

local company founded by Daniel Robins, who was an early partner of Albert Warner of

Warner Bros. It closed in 1974 and was vacant until 2018, when it was renovated and

reopened as a multipurpose venue in 2020.

21. At present, where are you likely to go for a concert?

A. Loew’s Palace Theatre. B. Robin’s Theatre.

C. Christian Revival Centre. D. Metropolitan Opera House.

22. What do Loew’s Palace Theatre and Metropolitan Opera House have in common?

A. Both of them used to show silent films.

B. Both of them have been restored.

C. Both of them served religious purposes.

D. Both of them were renamed.

23. What is the purpose of this passage?

A. To provide information on overlooked old theatres.

B. To rank the old and unnoticed theatres.

C. To encourage people to protect the old theatres.

D. To show the development of American theatres.

B

A new American weather satellite could save more lives by better predicting extreme

weather conditions. The satellite was launched in the state of Florida on November 19, 2016.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also known as NOAA, has been

working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on the project.

NOAA officials are calling the new satellite GOES-R. That is short for a much longer

name the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series.

NOAA said GOES-R could improve the nation’s ability to observe weather conditions

and make weather predictions. It said the satellite’s device would lead to more exact and

timely weather forecasts, watches and warnings.

The government agency said the satellite will require testing of its six instruments and

will be ready to work “within a year.” One of the six instruments on the satellite is designed

4

to help scientists study lightning strikes and map them. This, NOAA says, will help the

agency follow the movement of severe storms and provide more detailed warnings.

“The next generation of weather satellites is finally here,” said NOAA Administrator

Kathryn Sullivan. She described GOES-R as one of the most effective Earth-observing

machines ever created. Sullivan said its instruments will be able to study Earth five times

faster and with four times more details than any other NOAA satellite currently in operation.

An NOAA statement said the greater detail will help improve the agency’s study of ocean

storms, as well as “the prediction and warnings of severe weather.” In addition, GOES-R will

be able to provide improved rainfall estimates, which will lead to more timely and detailed

flood warnings.

Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA in

short, says that the GOES-R satellite will improve the ability of people and organizations

across America to prepare for, and react to, weather-related disasters.

24. What can we learn about the new weather satellite?

A. It has been put into service for more than 5 months already.

B. It is the most effective Earth-observing machine ever made.

C. It works faster and provides more detailed information than any other American satellite.

D. It can help America to get prepared for and react to climate catastrophes better.

25. The satellite gets its name directly from ______.

A. NOAA B. NASA C. GOES-R D. FEMA

26. Why does the reporter quote the words from different people and organizations in the

news?

A. To show opinions vary from person to person.

B. To show the development of the satellite.

C. To convince the readers of superb functions of the satellite.

D. To prove they are authorities.

27. The passage mainly focuses on ______.

A. a new American satellite that can be used for military purposes

B. what the next generation of American weather satellites will be like

C. the fact that NOAA and NASA work together to develop a new technology

D. the comparison between a new satellite and the older ones

C

Scot Case, Vice President of the environmental marketing firm Terra Choice, was not

5

happy. Case last year sent his researchers into a big-box retail store to evaluate the green

advertising claims of some of the products on its shelves. The results were shocking, of the

1,018 products Terra Choice surveyed, all but one failed to live up fully to their green boasts.

He couldn’t believe the result, and had his team redo the survey, but the results came

back the same. “It just shows we’re awash in greenwash.” He said.

Many consumers may not have heard the term greenwashing, but they’ve surely

experienced it-misleading marketing about the environmental benefits of a product.

Greenwashing isn’t new ever since the environment was an issue in the early 1970s.As going

green has become big business, environmental advocates worry that truly green companies

could get lost in the situation.

“We have such a challenge ahead of us on climate change,” says Kevin Tuerff, a co-

founder of the marketing consultancy EnviroMedia.”Greenwashing harms the effort we need

to be making.”

The first step to cleaning up greenwashing is to identify it, and Tuerff and his partners

have hit on an innovative way to spotlight particularly abnormal examples. They’ve launched

the Greenwashing Index a website that allows consumers to post ads that might be examples

of greenwashing and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5-I is a little green lie;5 is a big green lie.

It’s a simple device, but it shows the power of the Internet to uncover misleading ads

with a simple Web search, any consumer can find out the index they want to know. Googling

isn’t the only way to take out the greenwashing, however. The Terra Choice website offers a

list of what it calls the “six sins of greenwashing”--six simple signs that should remind

consumers of a company that is more interested in selling the earth than saving it.

“We have better green products but a lot of exaggerated(夸张的) claims,” says Case.

“That could be enough to destroy the whole green movement”-and that’s not a little green lie.

28. Which of the following statements is TRUE about greenwashing?

A.It is harmful for the environment.

B.It is a special way to wash so as to save water.

C.It is environment-friendly so it should be advocated.

D.It is beneficial for both the consumers and the companies.

29. Which measure should be used to tackle the greenwashing?

A.Holding hearings to tell genuine environmental claims from false ones.

B.Launching the Greenwashing Index a website to expose greenwashing.

C.Offering a list of “six sins of greenwashing” for companies’ reference.

6

D.Updating Green Guide for consumers which hasn’t changed since 1998.

30. Which of the following shows NO sign of greenwashing?

A.Organic products but without any certificates.

B.Energy-efficient products made of harmful material.

C.Food which is low in nutrition but high in calorie.

D.Pesticides which are said to be environment-friendly.

31. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.The effort on environmental protection.

B.The advocation of green advertisements.

C.The distinction between green products and common ones.

D.The distinction between real environmental claims and false ones.

D

Standing on the shore of a lake, I couldn't help but marvel at the tens or hundreds of

thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces,

their edges softening over time. And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?

Even the tallest mountains have worn down; none are as tall as they were 1,000 years ago.

And much like a rock, I've found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand

others has expanded with each trip around the sun.

Once I was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life

coursing over me, my edges are softer and more understanding. I'm less likely to judge and

more interested in learning how we can exist together. But now I'm not a rock. I'm a human

being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.

Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask

several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude. On the door read a

sign: Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don't like it either, but let's all

do what we can to get through this together. The group of young men wished to argue about

the note. I sat watching, understanding both sides. I've been those guys before, using my

youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from

experiences by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more open, I've also

found more happiness and success.

You can fit more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for

ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate

others. Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away

7

our resistance to seeing the world from another's point of view.

I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.

32. What does the author compare the rocks to?

A. People's abilities. B. People's personalities.

C. What nature offers us. D. Challenges we come across.

33. Why did the group of guys argue in the restaurant?

A. They were dissatisfied with the owner's attitude to them.

B.They were unwilling to do what the owner wished them to.

C. They intended to skip out on the bill due to the poor service.

D.They were not allowed to leave the restaurant for their rudeness.

34. What does the author want to tell us with this text?

A. We should adjust to new conditions.

B.Be brave when in the face of difficulties in life.

C. It's necessary to consider the feelings of others.

D. Being open and understanding brings you more happiness.

35. What might be the best title for the text?

A. Changing With Time B. Learning From Nature

C. Growing From Experiences D. Seeing From a Different Angle

第二节(共5 小题:每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两

项为多余选项。

Does life seem to be full of impossible problems? How many times do you find yourself

saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem”? Maybe it’s time to

introduce yourself to the power of yet. By adding this simple word, you can change

everything—“I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.” 36_____.

I read about a school that has transformed the way it marks its students’ exams. The school

recognized that the old pass/fail system wasn’t helping students’ motivation. If you passed,

then great, but those students who didn’t pass often felt like failures. So now students who

don’t get the score they need to pass, don’t see a big red “F” for fail on their exam papers;

instead, they see a “Not yet”. 37_____. They haven’t reached the destination, but they know

that they are going the right way.

38_____. People with a growth mindset don’t concentrate on failure. They aren’t worried

by not getting things right the first time and are content to keep trying until they do. 39_____.

8

In contrast, people who just focus on failure have what the experts call “a fixed mindset”.

These people are always worried about failure and are happy to give up when things don’t go

right. Apparently, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.

But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can train yourself to

develop a growth mindset. Stop believing that you can’t and realize that you just can’t yet.

40_____, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before.

A.Once you start doing this

B.With a strong growth mindset

C.Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible

D.That way the students feel that they are on a journey

E.They enjoy the challenge and believe they can change

F.Anyone can make a big difference by doing the following things

G.This kind of thinking is part of what experts call “having a growth mindset”

第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分)

第一节 (共15 小题; 每小题1 分,满分15分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最

佳选项。

Mark is leaving, and I’m feeling kind of sad.

You probably don’t know Mark, but you might be 41 enough to know someone just

like him. He’s been the heart and soul of the office, combining professional skills with a

sweet nature. He’s never been all that interested in getting praise for the 42 work he

does.

And now he’s moving on to an exciting new opportunity which sounds like the chance of

a lifetime, and we’re 43 pleased for him. But that doesn’t make it any easier to say

goodbye to a dear friend and 44 colleague.

Life has a way of throwing these curve balls(曲线球) at us. Just when we start to get

comfortable with a person, a place or a situation, something comes along to 45 it.

But how do we deal with change? There’s Chris, who once told me that the answer can

be expressed in four words, “Go 46 the flow.”

“It is like surfing,” Chris explained. “You can’t organize the ocean. 47 just happen.

You ride them 48 they take you, and then you go back out there and catch the next one.

Sure, you’re always hoping for the perfect wave. But 49 you just take them the way they

9

come.”

That doesn’t 50 that you don’t keep trying to make all your dreams come true. It

just means that when things 51 that aren’t exactly in your plan, you work around them—

and then you move on. Of course, some barriers(阻碍) along the 52 of life are easier to

take than others. A rained-out picnic, for example, is 53 to deal with than the sudden

death of a loved one. But the principle is the same.

We’re going to 54 Mark. But rather than on the sadness of our 55 , we’ll focus

on our hopes for a brighter future.
