I major in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science. When someone hears what I study, I’m usually faced

with two reactions. First up is a small smile with the word “overachiever” on the tip of their tongue. The second is a

look of confusion, followed by an exaggerated (夸张的) “why?”. The short answer: I want to be a problem solver, and

engineering teaches me how to become that type of person. In addition, I also want to be able to look at the bigger

picture.

It’s the beginning of a new year, and a lot of first-years have plans for double or triple majors. However, as most

of us quickly realize after that first fall semester, college is a lot! We are unavoidably forced to make choices-do we

keep trying to make our double or triple majors’ work or do we completely switch gears? The thing I wished someone

told me on day one is if you’re passionate about something, it’s not going to feel like work. Political Science can be

challenging, but to me, it’s fun to read the Constitution (宪法) and see the impact each word has on our interpretation.

This may sound hard to accept, but if you are double or triple majoring because you think you’re in a race with

your peers, you’re only running yourself into the ground. Don’t double or triple major if you are doing it for a mark on

your resume (简历), because then your life will be a living hell for the next four years. What is going to make you

impressive is the passion that you have-whether it be in your study, career, or something else your career and study

will enable you to do.

Always think about your “why” when it comes to the schedule a double or triple major involves. At the end of

the day, it’s going to be you doing the homework, so try to enjoy what you’re doing along the ride for what it’s worth

24. How do people tend to feel about the writer’s majors?

A. Impressed or puzzled. B. Ashamed or challenged.

C. Satisfied or confused. D. Amazed or concerned.

25. What enables the writer to enjoy learning Political Science?

A. The value of studying the Constitution. B. The influence of learning engineering.

C. His career planning for the future. D. His enthusiasm for the major.

26. According to the author, what causes multiple majors’ hard situation in college?

A. Adjusting the schedule for majors constantly.

B. Pursuing multiple majors out of competitive motivation.

C. Making random choices without sufficient consideration.

D. Estimating the difficulty of multiple majoring inaccurately.

27. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A. To promote the concept of multiple majoring.

B. To explain the reasons for choosing a double major

C. To compare the gains and losses of multiple majoring.

D. To stress the significance of passion in multiple majoring.

As the new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting booms and bangs to light up the sky.

The appeal of fireworks could fizzle out with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows, though.

Ollie Howitt, a leader of SkyMagic, which used a team of 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year

celebration last year, said demand had increased substantially. “We do think it’s going to be something that’s ever

catching on, as opposed to it being a short-lived sort of fashion people have suddenly got interested in. Drones are

reusable and there’s no polluting dust. In that sense they’re a very good, sustainable option,” she said.

But not everyone agrees. A spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose

environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have serious

concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” they

said.

An RSPCA spokesperson said that while drones were a possible idea to try to reduce the impact of displays on

animals, there were downsides. “Drones are not without their own negative issues such as scaring horses or crashing

into birds, and can cause disturbance to animals and members of the public. It’s therefore important for their effects to

be fully considered and measures taken to minimize the chance of accidents,” they said.

Some express the opinion that the use of fireworks and drones don’t exclude each other. The sight, sound and

gunpowder smell of fireworks will always provide its own unique excitement.

“We find fireworks work really well when teamed up with drones. But we don’t really see it as a one-replacing-

the-other at all. We feel as if it’s just another tool in the chest for how you enliven the sky and what you want to do

with the show you’re putting on,” said Howitt, noting that while fireworks give a loud, emotive, big performance,

drones offer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of images.

28. What does the underlined phrase “fizzle out” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Catch on. B. Create an impact. C. Wind up. D. Make a comeback.

29. What does Howitt think about a drone display in Paragraph 2?

A. It’s definitely an upward trend.

B. It’ll get us to reflect on energy crisis.

C. It’s nothing but a temporary phenomenon.

D. It’ll excite the public curiosity about science.

30. Which of the following may Howitt suggest according to the last paragraph?

A. Promoting the production of drones. B. Diversifying the functions of drones.

C. Prohibiting the displays of fireworks. D. Staging drone shows as an addition.

31. In which section of a website can we read this text?

A. Advertisement. B. Business. C. Health. D. Environment.

Some evidence suggested humans first moved from Africa into Eurasia (the land of Europe and Asia) about 60,

000 years ago, quickly replacing other early human species, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, who they may

have met along the way.

However, recent discoveries, including 100, 000-year-old human teeth found in a cave in China, have clouded

this straightforward statement. The latest find, a prehistoric jawbone at the Misliya Cave in Israel nearly 200, 000

years ago, which is almost twice as old as any Homo sapiens(智人) remains discovered outside Africa, where our

species was thought to have originated from, has added an unexpected twist.

The find suggests there were multiple waves of migration across Europe and Asia and could also mean modern

humans in the Middle East were interacting, and possibly mating, with other human species for tens of thousands of

years. “Misliya breaks the existing assumptions of the timing of the first known Homo sapiens in these regions,” said

Chris Stringer, head of human origins at the Natural History Museum in London. “It’s important in removing a long-

lasting limit on our thinking.”

Prof. Hershkovitz, who led the work said, “What Misliya tells us is that modern humans left Africa not 100, 000

years ago, but 200, 000 years ago. This is a revolution in the way we understand the evolution of our own species.” He

also added that the record now indicates that humans probably travelled beyond the African continent whenever the

climate allowed it. “I don’t believe there was one big departure from Africa,” he said. “I think that throughout

hundreds of thousands of years humans were coming in and out of Africa all the time.”

The discovery means modern humans were potentially meeting and interacting during a longer period with other

ancient human groups, providing more opportunity for cultural and biological exchanges. It also raises interesting

questions about the fate of the earliest modern human pioneers. Genetic data from modern-day populations around the

world strongly suggest that everyone outside Africa can trace their ancestors back to a group that left around 60, 000

years ago. So the inhabitants of the Misliya Cave are probably not the ancestors of anyone alive today, and scientists

can only guess why their branch of the family tree came to an end.

32. What does the Misliya discovery suggest?

A. Our ancestors were powerful and kind of strong.

B. The origins of modern humans are from Europe.

C. Our ancestors left Africa much earlier than thought.

D. Homo sapiens, Neanderthals and Denisovans once lived together.

33. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 1?

A. Neanderthals and Denisovans.

B. Early human species living in Europe.

C. Ancient people living in Africa all the time.

D. People first moving from Africa into Eurasia.

34. What can be learned from Prof. Hershkovitz’s words in Paragraph 4?

A. There was a large-scale human migration from Africa.

B. Climate was a big factor in human migration from Africa.

C. Human migration was occasional in Africa 200, 000 years ago.

D. The Misliya find is against our understanding of human evolution.

35. What can we infer about those living in Misliya 200, 000 years ago according to the last paragraph?

A. They were ancestors of people living in China.

B. They left evidence for their mysterious disappearance in history.

C. They probably contributed little to present-day people genetically

D. They could be traced by their remains left on their travelling route.

第二节 读后续写(满分 20 分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually, Mom was awake making breakfast and

cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and

asked with great concern if she was okay. “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal

(燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in bed.”

Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed

all day. How could Jeremy help? First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put

away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Jeremy

thought. Saturday was the day when mom did some washing. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the

machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the clothes basket, inside which there was his mother’s

favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.

Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do the washing lots of

times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door

and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in,

and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!

Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy

opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything

seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右

2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
