Hangzhou dishes are one of the eight great cuisines of China. They are noted for their
seasonal ingredients, elaborate preparation, sophisticated cooking techniques, and
refreshing taste. A trip to Hangzhou isn't complete without trying some of its speciality
dishes. Here are a few must-try meals. Each of them has an age old story.
Dongpo Pork (red-braised pork belly)
The dish was named after a Song Dynasty (960-1279) poet and official, Su Dongpo.
When Su was banished to Hangzhou, he initiated a thorough dredging of West Lake. This
had great benefits for the locals. To express their gratitude, they gifted Su a lot of pork. Su
added his own twist to the traditional cooking process of braised pork belly. He added
yellow wine and stewed it on low heat. He distributed the dish to those who worked on the
project. It became widely favored.
West Lake Carp in Vinegar Gravy
Legend has it that two brothers surnamed Song lived in Hangzhou. The elder brother
was murdered by a local villain. In desperation and fear for his safety, the younger brother
was forced into exile. During his farewell dinner, his recently widowed sister-in-law
cooked a dish. It was both sweet and sour. She was implying that the young Song should
not forget the salt amid the sweet. The younger brother later returned as a high ranking
official, avenged his brother's murder, and sought out his sister. The dish has been handed
down from generation to generation.
Sister Song's Fish Soup
During the Song Dynasty, a woman nicknamed Sister Song settled down alongside
West Lake. She made a living selling fish soup. On a trip to West Lake, Emperor Gaozong
tasted her fish soup and spoke very highly of it. The soup's reputation spread far and wide,
and it became a calling card for the city.
Sauteed Shrimps with Longjing Tea
The story of this dish relates to Emperor Qianlong. He ruled from 1644-1911. On an
excursion to Hangzhou, one of his chefs accidentally dropped Longjing tea leaves into the
sauteed shrimp. The lingering fragrance of the tea combined with the divine texture of the
shrimp won him over. A classic Hangzhou dish was born.
21. What do the four dishes have in common?

23. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
第 3 页,共 10 页
A. To tell some interesting old stories.

B
Two days before I had a heart attack in February 2017,I was 37, and active. I’d been
in the Marine Corps until 2011, then I became a wilderness and survival skills guide. Even
when I got to hospital, I struggled to believe I was having a heart attack, but I was rushed
into an operating room and a stent was fitted.
When I came out of hospital three days later, I could barely walk and was put into
cardiac rehab(心脏康复). But I believed I needed something else to heal me. As an outdoor
guy who could make stone tools and live off the land, I knew that was where I needed to be.
And so, I went to live in a cave, near where I could hunt animals and drink from streams.
I didn’t bring much from modern life. I always had a notebook with me with a photo
of my sons, and something to write with. Depending on what I was doing or how I was
feeling, I’d bring a steel bottle back out to the caves, which made it a bit easier to boil
water. Foraged food formed most of my diet---plants, berries, tubers, roots. I caught fish,
squirrels and rabbits. You learn to really appreciate food: “Yes, I’ve got a fish and five
berries! Today is awesome.” I missed my sons, but I also knew that this was my time to
really heal and reflect, and there was always something to do.
I was becoming part of the pattern of life that existed in the wild, understanding the
sounds and the smells. You can choose to fight it , or to try to control it, but when you
accept it, you reach a deeper understanding of who you are and what you’re doing out
there. The day of my heart attack changed my life, because it was a reawakening. Knowing
that eventually one day you will expire, you need to live the life that you want, find the
value.
Now I live between the worlds. For all the time I still spend in the wilderness, social
media has actually become a big part of my life. Now I’ve written books, done reality
shows, and consulted for movies. I’ve embraced this element of modern life, and hope to
fuel people’s curiosity about the natural world.
Many of us accept life is just the way it is, but there are some outliers who want
something different. I don’t judge anybody for the choices they make, but I think some
people get influenced to believe in things that don’t matter. My passion is doing less with
more, in the simplest way possible. Ancient humans focused on family, community, and
the natural world, and I think we can learn so much from that.
24. How did the author feel when he suffered a heart attack?
A. Frustrated B. Terrified C. Doubtful D. Disappointed
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. A struggle to fight against the life in the wild
B. A pattern of life that exists in the wild
C. An appeal to people for a life in the wild
第 4 页,共 10 页
D. A suggestion to live without modern appliances
26. What does “it” refer to in paragraph 4?
A. The wilderness B. Modern life C. My life D. Social media
27. Which of the following life style may the author be in favor of?
A. A life the way it is.
B. A life avoiding modern devices.
C. A life ancient humans had.
D. A life as simple as possible.
C
Expecting the worst to avoid feeling bad later is known as “bracing”, which means
preparing for unpleasant situations. It may help them prepare for emotionally challenging
situations, particularly in the moments before these situations occur. People brace for the
worst while waiting for potentially negative outcomes. Someone might also brace for the
worst in anticipation(预期,预料) of stressful events like giving a presentation at work.
Some psychological theories suggest that bracing should help. For example, “decision
affect theory” proposes that how we feel about a situation is determined partly by
comparing what actually happened with what could have happened. Based on this, people
should be happy when an event goes beyond their expectations, and disappointed when an
event falls behind. Therefore, by anticipating the worst, one can safeguard themselves
against future disappointment, as any result is likely to surpass their expectations.
But other psychological theories undermine the idea that bracing will be helpful. It
has been theorized and scientifically established---that expectations can powerfully
influence reality. There are two key ways that expectations can shape reality.
First, people may behave in ways that fit with their expectations. If you expect to fail
an upcoming test or interview, then you might not invest efforts in preparation, which in
turn reduces your chances of doing well. Second, people may interpret a situation in line
with their expectations. Imagine you believe you are insufficiently qualified for a job
you’ve applied for. During the job interview, you’re likely to interpret blank expressions
from the interviewer in line with this belief, which could negatively affect your
performance. In fact, the interviewer did not want to give anything away.
Drawing together the scientific studies, it seems that expecting the worst is anything
but a wise way to prepare for upcoming news or results. It might be better to hold positive
expectations than to brace for the worst.
28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. How preparing for the unpleasant situations benefits people.
B. People’s different reactions faced with different situations.
C. The relation between people’s expectation and reality.
D. The emotions hidden behind anticipating the worst.
29. What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Strengthen. B. Determine. C. Oppose. D. Justify.
30. How can negative expectations probably affect people’s performance in reality?
第 5 页,共 10 页
A. By reducing people’s chances of doing well.
B. By promoting people’s ambition and motivation.
C. By attaching importance to people’s potential of excellence.
D. By causing less preparation and some misinterpretations.
31. What is the author’s attitude toward bracing for the worst?
A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Approving.

On Sept. 12, 2023, Apple made an announcement. It said it will use the USB-C
connector for all its new iPhone 15 models. This is a big deal. It means that all new
iPhones will have the same connector. USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. The C refers
to the third type. It follows types A and B.
The USB Implementers Forum is made up of over 1,000 companies. They promote
and support USB technology. The group developed the USB-C connector. It replaces the
older USB connectors. It also replaces other types of ports(端口). These include HDMI,
DisplayPort and VGA. The aim is to create a single, universal connector for a wide range
of devices.
The key features and benefits of USB-C include a reversible(可逆的) connector. You
can insert it in either end. It also allows some cables to have the same connector on both
ends for connecting between devices and connecting devices to chargers, unlike most
earlier USB and Lightning cables.
USB-C's widespread adoption in the electronics industry is likely to lead to a
universal standard. This reduces the need for multiple types of cables and adapters. Also,
its slim and compact shape allows manufacturers to make thinner and lighter devices.
Why does USB-C matters? Due to the fragmented(支离破碎的) nature of technology
evolution, computer users a decade ago were struggling. They had too many connectors:
USB for data; power cables for charging; HDMI or DisplayPort or VGA for video; and
Ethernet for internet. This called for an industrywide effort to convergence on an
all-purpose connector. Since its introduction in 2014, USB-C has gained widespread
popularity. It has already become the connector of choice for most non-Apple devices.
Apple converted the iPad Pro to USB-C in 2018. Now, it is doing the same for the best
selling Apple device, the iPhone. Some market forecasts suggest there will be close to 4
billion USB-C connector sales by 2025 and 19 billion by 2033.
32. Which organization developed the USB-C connector?
A. Universal Serial Bus B. The USB Implementers Forum.
C. Apple Inc. D. HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA
33. What was the goal of developing the USB-C connector ?
A. To replace all USB connectors with USB-C.
B. To take the place of other types of ports.
C. To create a universal connector for various devices.
D. To develop a connector for Apple devices.
34. What is the key characteristic of USB-C mentioned in the text?
第 6 页,共 10 页
A. It has a reversible connector.
B. It requires adapters for most devices.
C. It is slim and has a compact shape.
D. It supports only Apple devices.
35. When was USB-C introduced to the market?
A. 2014. B. 2025. C. 2033. D. 2018.

How to communicate complex information?
Did you ever have to read a presentation where you felt like you’re lost in confusing
terms, data and concepts? Are you giving others this same experience?
Communicating complex information is a common challenge in presentations. 36
Here’s how you can get complex information across.
Use interactive content. It gets the readers more involved in your presentation by
letting them play an active part. For example, allow them to choose the content route they
wish to take. Beyond that, questionnaires and chatbots provide personalized and specific
answers to readers as part of your presentation. Making your presentation interactive used
to be hard, but now you can just use Storydoc. Go make your first interactive presentation.
37
38 No one will read a presentation with a thousand words. Do everyone a favor
and use images. Images can be super effective at communicating complex information and
save you a lot of needless text. In fact, visual representation of data and concepts can often
convey what words cannot. Use diagrams and images to illustrate your points and simplify
the complex.
Narrate your content. 39 Whether it’s through text to speech Al or video bubbles,
centering your presentation around a story can help guide your audience through the
complexity, making it more digestible, engaging, and memorable.
Use examples and fables. 40 . Because they are what we’ve already known and
understood. This makes the complex concepts less new and more familiar. More
importantly, the real secret lies in selecting examples that are not just familiar but also
deeply relevant-those are the ones that will truly ring with your listeners.
A. It’s easy as pie.
B. Show, don’t tell.
C. Make every word count.
D. They can help explain clearly the complexity of ideas
E. If you don’t sound excited, the listeners won’t feel excited either.
F. Storytelling is another powerful tool for communicating complex concepts.
G. But there are ways to simplify your presentation and reengage your audience.

Sometimes a part of us must die before another part can come to life. Even though

The discovery of ancient counting rods(算筹) made of ivory suggests that the Chinese
may have been the first in the world to conceive of negative and positive numbers — 800
years earlier than India — according to recent research.
Sixty-one rods 61 (unearth) between 2004 and 2008 in Xi'an, Shaanxi
province, at the Qin Mausoleum of Shenheyuan for royalty during the Warring States
Period (475-221 BC). They range in 62 (long) from 18.3 to 18.5 centimeters and
have a diameter of 0.49 to 0.54cm. Each weighs about 5.7 to 7.7 grams.
After years of research, experts have concluded that the ivory rods were likely
63 (have) been one of the earliest counting 64 (tool) used to distinguish
the concept of positive and negative.
They are the first such painted rods to be found — either red and white 65
red and black.
In an early text 66 (produce) during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220),
Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, the mathematician Liu Hui mentioned that red
counting rods represent positive numbers and black ones represent negative numbers.
Li Zhenfei, 67 doctoral student from the School of Cultural Heritage at
Northwest University in Xi'an, said on Tuesday that the discovery of the counting rods is
an important achievement in the history of mathematics, 68 it indicates that
Chinese people had developed the concept of negative and positive numbers during the late
Warring States Period.
This was more than 800 years before the arithmetic system for addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division 69 (involve) positive and negative numbers was put
forward by Indian mathematicians in the 7th century, Li said. It reflects the high level of
accomplishment 70 mathematics in ancient China.
